2001 Cross Country Review

2001 Season Review

Head coach Robin Balder-Lanoue led the CSB cross-country team to an all around successful season.  She successfully combined the talent of the old with the talent of the new.  The Blazers had ten returning runners among the 32 runners on its roster, meaning a season full of experience, yet one of depth and potential built upon a foundation of first-year athletes.  Leading the way for the team was senior Emily Nelson, former All-MIAC performer, and senior Beth Sexton.  The Blazers started the season strong with outstanding finishes in their first three meets.  CSB took 2nd place at the National Catholic Invite in South Bend, Indiana.  The meet was host to many nationally ranked competitors and the Blazers strong finish gave them confidence early.  The team finished 2nd place at the St. John’s Invitational. Next, they won the St. Olaf meet with a near-perfect score.  Seven runners finished in the top ten.

Saint Ben’s took 4th place in the MIAC Cross Country Championships, their best finish since 1997.  CSB took 5th place at the NCAA Division III Central Regional Run at Grinnell, IA, just barely missing a team berth.  Six of seven Blazers ran their personal bests.  Senior Emily Nelson finished in 6th place. CSB finished ahead of two MIAC teams that they were behind in the conference meet and missed nationals by a mere 12 points.
