STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The WIAC Tournament-bound College of Saint Benedict lacrosse team closed out the regular season in emphatic fashion Sunday, rolling to a 22-4 victory over UW-Stevens Point.
With the win, Saint Benedict (6-6, 4-4 WIAC) secured the No. 5 seed in the upcoming WIAC Tournament and will travel to face No. 4 seed UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday, April 29 at 5 p.m. The postseason berth marks the Bennies' second straight appearance in the WIAC playoffs.
The Bennies took control early and never looked back, building a 7-2 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 13-2 by halftime. Saint Benedict continued its strong play in the second half, outscoring UW-Stevens Point 9-2 to seal the decisive win. The 22-goal output marked the fifth time in 12 games this season that CSB has reached the 20-goal mark.
Sophomore
Lilly Fandel Thompson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) paced the offense with a career-high five goals and added an assist for six points. She also contributed a draw control and caused two turnovers.
The Bennies received balanced scoring throughout the lineup. First-year
Rayna Malmberg (Stillwater, Minn.) scored four goals and added seven draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover. Sophomore
Ava Mosley (Stillwater, Minn.) continued her consistent production with four goals and an assist, marking her 20th career multi-goal game, while adding two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Mosley now has 82 career goals and 107 career points.
First-year
Kyra Stofer (Cottage Grove, Minn.) turned in a career-best performance with four goals, along with two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior
Tess Cavanaugh (Edina, Minn.) added two goals and three ground balls, while first-year
Emma Theisen (Rosemount, Minn.) contributed two goals and an assist to go along with three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Junior
Lizzie Schrubbe added five points with a goal and four assists, along with a ground ball and caused turnover. She now has 94 career assists and, combined with her 56 goals, has reached the 150-point milestone.
In goal, first-year
Ashley Fischer (Madison Lake, Minn.) recorded five saves while allowing just four goals in another strong effort.
Saint Benedict controlled the game statistically as well, finishing with 10 assists on 22 goals and holding a 31-8 advantage in shots on goal. The Bennies also led, 30-16, in ground balld;draw controls 14-13, forced 16 turnovers and successfully cleared the ball on 16-of-20 attempts.
