CSB lacrosse falls to UW-Eau Claire in WIAC Tournament Quarterfinals

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – First-year Rayna Malmberg (Stillwater, Minn.) scored five goals and fellow first-year Emma Theisen (Rosemount, Minn.) recorded a career-high eight points (four goals, four assists), but the College of Saint Benedict lacrosse team (6-7) fell,15-13, to UW-Eau Claire (8-5) in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday in Eau Claire, Wis.

The Bennies close the season at 6-7, marking their second straight WIAC Tournament appearance. Despite being outshot 30-25, CSB built a 6-4 lead after the first quarter. UW-Eau Claire responded with a 4-1 advantage in the second stanza to take an 8-7 halftime lead. Saint Benedict had a 3-2 edge in the third quarter to even the score at 11-11, but the Blugolds pulled away with a 5-3 margin in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

UW-Eau Claire held a 46-39 advantage in ground balls and won draw controls, 17-13. The Bennies were efficient on clears, converting 15 of 17 attempts, while the Blugolds finished 9-for-11.

Malmberg capped her season with four or more goals in each of the final three games. In addition to her five goals, she added five draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnover. She finished second on the team with 46 points on 28 goals and 18 assists, while leading the squad with 48 draw controls.

Senior Sami Hackley (Plymouth, Minn.) scored twice and concluded her career with program-record totals of 168 goals and 207 points. She also recorded 40 career multi-goal games.

Theisen added her eight points along with ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover, finishing her debut season with 29 goals and 38 points.

Ava Mosley (Stillwater, Minn.) scored once, ending the season with 33 goals, nine assists and 42 points, while increasing her career totals to 83 goals and 107 points. Sophomore Kamryn Peterson (Lindstrom, Minn.) contributed a goal and an assist.

In goal, Ashley Fisher (Madison Lake, Minn.) made 10 saves and finished the season with 111. She also recorded four ground balls against the Blugolds.
