EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The College of Saint Benedict lacrosse team (2-5, 0-3 WIAC) mounted a late push but fell, 12-10, to UW-Eau Claire (5-2, 3-0 WIAC) in conference play Wednesday at Sonnentag Fieldhouse.
CSB led 3-2 early before the Blugolds built an 11-6 advantage. The Bennies rallied late, cutting the deficit to 12-10 by the final horn.
Ava Mosley (Stillwater, Minn.) recorded her fourth straight three-goal game, increasing her season total to 21 and her career mark to 71 with 19 multi-goal performances.
Sami Hackley (Plymouth, Minn.) added a multi-goal effort (two goals) for the 39th time in her career, bringing her totals to 22 goals this season and 153 goals and 188 points overall. First-year
Rayna Malmberg (Stillwater, Minn.) matched her season-high with five points on two goals and three assists and now has four multi-goal games this year with 18 points (9g, 9a).
Tess Cavanaugh (Edina, Minn.) scored her second goal of the season,
Emma Theisen (Rosemount, Minn.) added her 11th, and
Lilly Fandel Thompson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) netted her eighth. First-year goalkeeper
Ashley Fischer (Madison Lake, Minn.) made 10 saves, marking her fourth consecutive game with double-digit stops and raising her season total to 61.
UW-Eau Claire opened with two early goals before Theisen and Malmberg answered to tie the game, 2-2. Hackley then scored off a Malmberg assist to give CSB a 3-2 lead. The Blugolds responded with four straight goals to take a 6-3 lead before Mosley converted a free-position attempt to make it 6-4 at the end of the first quarter.
The Blugolds extended their lead to 7-4 early in the second, but CSB answered with goals from Cavanaugh (off Malmberg's third assist of the half) and Hackley (assisted by
Lizzie Schrubbe (Andover, Minn.) to close within 7-6. UW-Eau Claire then scored four straight goals spanning the second and third quarters to build an 11-6 advantage.
Malmberg halted the run late in the third to make it 11-7. In the fourth quarter, teams traded goals before Mosley scored twice to bring CSB within 12-9. Fandel Thompson added a free-position goal with 21 seconds remaining to cap the scoring at 12-10.
CSB returns to action Wednesday, April 8, hosting Augsburg in WIAC play at 6 p.m.
