Sami Hackley (Plymouth, Minn.) scored seven goals and added three assists to lead the College of Saint Benedict lacrosse team to a commanding 21-2 nonconference victory over Edgewood on Saturday at the CSB Turf Field.
The Bennies (1-0) opened the season in dominant fashion behind Hackley's 10-point performance and a five-goal effort from sophomore
Ava Mosley (Stillwater, Minn.). Junior
Lizzie Schrubbe (Andover, Minn.) added two goals and four assists, while first-year goaltender
Ashley Fischer (Madison Lake, Minn.) allowed just two goals to earn her first career victory in net for Saint Benedict.
Saint Benedict controlled the contest from the start, finishing with a 54-6 advantage in shots and a 26-2 edge in shots on goal. The Bennies also forced 30 Edgewood turnovers and were a perfect 16-for-16 on clears.
Hackley, who has now scored five or more goals eight times in her career and seven or more goals on three occasions, led the early charge as the Bennies built a 6-0 lead in the opening quarter. She scored two of those goals as CSB held a 17-0 edge in shots during the period.
The Bennies continued their offensive surge in the second quarter, scoring six more goals to take a 12-0 halftime lead. Mosley scored twice during the period as Saint Benedict maintained a 17-0 margin in shots on goal through the first half.
CSB extended the lead in the third quarter with a 4-1 scoring edge to make it 16-1 heading into the final frame. St. Benedict then added five goals in the fourth quarter while allowing one to secure the season-opening win.
Hackley's seven-goal performance adds to an already impressive career resume. She now owns 34 career multi-goal games and has increased her career total to 138 goals. Mosley, meanwhile, pushed her career goal total to 55 and recorded her 14th career multi-goal game.
First-year
Rayna Malmberg (Stillwater, Minn.) scored two goals and added three assists, while fellow first-year
Emma Theisen (Rosemount, Minn.) finished with two goals and an assist as both players recorded the first goals of their collegiate careers.
Saint Benedict also held advantages in draw controls (12-9) and ground balls (30-9) in the decisive victory.
The Bennies return to action on March 14 when they host the Milwaukee School of Engineering at noon.
