Hackley and Malmberg score twice but CSB lacrosse falls to Carroll, 17-7

WAUKESHA, Wis. – First-year Rayna Malmberg (Stillwater, Minn.) and senior Sami Hackley (Plymouth, Minn.) each scored two goals, but the College of Saint Benedict lacrosse team (2-1) fell,17-7, on the road to Carroll University (8-0) Saturday at Schneider Stadium.

Hackley continued her strong start to the season, increasing her team-leading total to 14 goals through three games while moving to 145 career goals and 36 career multi-goal performances. Malmberg added to her early-season production with two goals, giving her six on the year.

The Bennies also received goals from Ava Mosley (Stillwater, Minn.), who now has nine this season, along with first-year Emma Theisen (Rosemount, Minn.) and first-year Annabella Brisk (Oceanside, Calif.). Brisk netted the first goal of her collegiate career, while Theisen pushed her season total to seven.

Carroll opened the game with a 3-0 run before CSB responded to tie the score at 3-3 on goals from Hackley, Bosley and Malmberg. After Carroll regained the lead at 4-3, Theisen answered to even the score at 4-4.

The momentum shifted in the second period as Carroll outscored the Bennies 5-1, with Brisk accounting for CSB's lone goal, to take a 10-5 lead into halftime. Carroll continued to pull away in the third, holding a 5-1 edge despite a goal from Malmberg, making it 15-6 entering the final period.

In the fourth, both teams scored twice in a 2-1 Carroll advantage to bring the game to its 17-7 final.

Saint Benedict returns to action Sunday when it faces No. 18 Chicago (4-3) at 1 p.m. at Stagg Field in Chicago, Ill.
