Hockey Downs No. 14 UW-Eau Claire in Season Opener

Bennies best Blugolds, 3-1, for first season-opening win since 2019-20

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - In front of a packed Municipal Athletic Complex (MAC), the College of Saint Benedict hockey team opened its 2026-27 season with a 3-1 win over No. 14 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday night, Oct. 30. The win puts CSB at 1-0-0 on the fresh season, while UWEC opens at 0-1-0. It marks CSB's first win over UW-Eau Claire since 1998, and the first season-opening victory since the 2019-20 campaign.

The Bennie offense featured three different goal scorers on the night. First-year Pyper Andrews (Andover, Minn./Andover) dazzled in her collegiate debut with a goal and an assist. Junior Greer Hardacre (Chaska, Minn./Southwest Christian) net the first goal of her career, while senior Shae Stinnett (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) also scored. First-year Cambriia Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) recorded a pair of assists in her first collegiate game, while sophomore Bailey Vesper (South Saint Paul, Minn./South Saint Paul) also added a helper.

Sophomore Lexi Badali (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) picked up right where she left off a season ago, making 38 saves to secure the win.

Saint Benedict went on the penalty kill just over a minute into the game, but four saves by Badali and a key blocked shot from senior Emily Wendorf (Minnetrista, Minn./Mound Westonka) killed the power play to keep the game scoreless.

The Bennies were poised to strike first, but Stinnett's shot at the halfway point of the opening period hit the iron to keep it tied at zero. The Blugolds quickly responded with a scoring opportunity of their own. After their first shot went wide floating across the crease, another Blugold tried to bury the puck but sophomore Helena Siska (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) came crashing through to successfully block the opportunity on a diving effort with just under eight minutes to play in the opening period.

Staring down a breakaway opportunity with time dwindling down, Badali came through with another big save to end the scoreless period, shifting momentum towards the home bench.

The second period was all CSB, beginning with a top shelf shot by Andrews. The first-year got the first goal of the game for the Bennies 10:40 into the second period, as she snuck a shot between the UWEC goalkeeper and the pipes to crack the scoreboard first.

Saint Benedict needed just 28 seconds to double its lead. Senior Ella Tuccitto (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) threaded a pass backwards to a crashing Hardacre, who lifted one through traffic to make it 2-0.

Once again facing a lopsided opportunity, Badali stood tall in goal with a save in the final minute of the second period to keep the score at 2-0 in favor of the home team.

UW-Eau Claire came out firing in the third period, but back-to-back Badali saves in the first 30 seconds of action kept the Bennies in front by a pair.

A power play opportunity helped the Blugolds get on the board, cutting the gap to one goal with just over 15 minutes left to play.

The Bennies did not hesitate, answering seven minutes later to push the lead back to two. After the initial shot by Thomas was saved, Stinnett buried the rebound to make it 3-1 with eight minutes remaining.

The two-goal lead proved to be enough for CSB, as the Bennies solidified the ranked win to begin the season.
