Hockey Falters to No. 14 UW-Eau Claire

Two third period goals hand Bennies first loss of season

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Two third period goals were the difference in the game for the College of Saint Benedict hockey team, as the Bennies (1-1-0) fell 3-1 to No. 14 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday, Oct. 31. The loss marks a split weekend between the two squads.

Saint Benedict's lone goal of the game came from sophomore Helena Siska (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North). Junior Merrill Delich (Andover, Minn./Andover) added an assist on the score.

In goal for the Bennies, sophomore Lexi Badali (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) made 32 saves throughout the contest. Defensively, Siska and junior Skylar Salscheider (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Gentry Academy) led the team with three blocked shots apiece to help keep the home team in the game.

As a unit, Saint Ben's was outshot, 35-12, while a closely contested battle at the faceoff saw UWEC (1-1-0) snag a 26-25 advantage. CSB recorded 15 blocked shots, three more than the Blugolds. Neither team capitalized on a power play opportunity, as the Bennies had three chances and UW-Eau Claire had a pair.

CSB looked to have the first good look of the game, as first-year Frankie Pipitone (Wheaton, Ill./Apex Virtual) ripped a shot on target in the first minute. UWEC's goalie was able to get a pad on it to keep the game scoreless.

The Blugolds got the first goal of the game exactly 11 minutes in, using a rebounded shot to take the lead.

Saint Ben's quickly regrouped to even the score. Delich picked off a pass in the neutral zone to catch the Blugolds in transition. The junior sent a perfect pass to Siska, who showed off her stick handling abilities, convincing UW-Eau Claire's keeper to commit before the shot. Seizing the open opportunity, Siska wasted no time putting the puck in the twine to even the score at 1-1 with six left to play in the opening period.

Looking for a last-second opportunity, sophomore Bailey Vesper (South Saint Paul, Minn./South Saint Paul Secondary) ripped a shot with three seconds to play, but it went wide of the net to finish the first period at 1-1.

The two teams wasted no time trading shots in the second period. Badali came up with a save just over a minute into the frame, setting up the CSB offense. The Bennies quickly made their way down to the offensive zone. Crashing towards the net, first-year Pyper Andrews (Andover, Minn./Andover) put one on goal, creating a rebound opportunity for senior Shae Stinnett (North Oaks, Minn./Hill-Murray). Stinnett's shot could not beat UWEC's Addison Moudry, whose back-to-back saves kept the score even two minutes in.

A power play opportunity for the Bennies near the halfway point came up empty handed. After Siska won the faceoff to set up the offensive threat, her, junior Jorja Jusczak (Moose Lake, Minn./Moose Lake), and sophomore Regan Flohrs (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) peppered the Blugold defense with three shots in five seconds, all of which could not find the back of the net.

With 20 seconds remaining in the second period, Badali came up clutch with a save in final seconds to send the two teams into the final period deadlocked at one.

Nearly halfway through the third period, the Blugolds broke through for a goal to take control of the game before tacking on an insurance goal two minutes later. The two scores were enough to secure the win, 3-1.

Saint Ben's remains home to host Lake Forest College Friday-Saturday, Nov. 6-7. Friday's game is slated for 7 p.m. puck drop, while Saturday will start at 2 p.m.
