Volleyball Upends St. Olaf in Crucial Road Contest

Bennies improve to 11-9, 5-2 in MIAC play

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team snagged a crucial Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win at St. Olaf College Friday, Oct. 23. The Bennies (11-9, 5-2) downed the Oles (18-6, 5-2 MIAC) in four sets behind scores of 25-18, 25-18, 25-23, 25-22.

Seniors Kali Jones (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Kate Stadum (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) powered the Bennies on both ends of the ball, as they each tallied a double-double performance. Jones led the team with 16 kills to go along with 15 digs. Stadum paced the Bennies with a career-high 22 digs, smashing her previous career-high of 14, while adding 10 kills. Sophomore Karley Dunham (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) finished third on the team with nine kills on a .269 attack percentage.

The usual duo of junior Izzy Torve (Loretto, Minn./Orono) and sophomore Ginny Schuler (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) orchestrated the attack while both also adding a double-double night. Torve topped the team with 20 assists while chipping in 14 digs, closely followed by 18 assists and 12 digs from Schuler. Torve also led the Bennies with four aces, while Stadum and Jones closely followed with three and two, respectively.

Making her net presence known, sophomore Sydney Elliott (Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) led the team with three blocks. Senior Brooke Andries (Marshall, Minn./Marshall) added a pair of stuffs, while three other Bennies each assisted on one rejection.

All tied at 13 in the opening set, Saint Ben's used a three-point run to pull ahead. Following a St. Olaf error, Jones landed an ace and a kill by Andries gave the visitors a three-point cushion, 16-13. The Oles responded with a run of their own, bringing the score level at 17.

Looking to break the tie, Dunham downed a ball from Schuler, sparking a clutch 7-0 run for CSB. The sophomore added another kill on the ensuing point before a Torve ace brought about a St. Olaf timeout, 20-17. The Bennies stayed hot out of the break, as Satdum roped down a kill before Torve tacked on back-to-back aces to continue her stretch from the service line. The setter then connected again with Stadum, pushing set point, 24-27. After the home team finally got a sideout, Dunham ended set one in favor of Saint Benedict with a kill, 25-18.

After dropping set two, 25-18, the Bennies found themselves in a 15-10 deficit in the third. Saint Ben's did not panic, though, as a 5-1 run followed to bring the set within reach. Elliott and Andries paired up for a block before Jones dropped in an ace. Following a sideout, Elliott and Stadum sent back an Oles attack attempt for a block. Dunham dropped in two straight kills to trim the gap to one to close out the run, 16-15. The Bennies finally evened the score at 20 thanks to a miscue by St. Olaf.

With the Oles ahead by one, 22-21, CSB rattled off three straight points to swing the momentum. Back-to-back attack errors forced St. Olaf to call timeout. Once play resumed, Stadum sent a shot to the back corner for a kill to cue set point, 24-22, forcing the home team to quickly call timeout again. After a STO kill kept the set alive, Andries punched down a shot off a Schuler set to steal the swing set, 25-23.

A closely contested fourth set saw Saint Ben's climb back to erase a small deficit, 15-13, by taking four of the next five points. An Andries kill was followed by an Oles miscue to make it 15 apiece. After St. Olaf jumped back in front thanks to a service error, Andries and Stadum combined for back-to-back kills to propel the Bennies in front, 17-16.

All tied at 17, Torve fed Dunham for a kill to ignite a three-point run for CSB. Following an attack error, Torve hit Jones for a kill, who buried her shot to make it 20-17. Saint Ben's remained in front the rest of the way, as a Elliott-Andries block was followed by an Andries kill to bring up match point, 24-20. The Oles staved off match point twice, but a kill from Stadum finalized the final point of the night in favor of the visitors, 25-22.

Saint Benedict returns home to host Augsburg University Saturday, Oct. 24. Action is slated to begin at 5 p.m. inside Claire Lynch Hall.
