CSB Soccer battles No. 3 CNU before falling, 2-0, on the road

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The College of Saint Benedict soccer team (0-2) put up a tough fight on the road against No. 3 Christopher Newport University (2-0) but ultimately fell, 2-0, in Sunday's matchup.

The game remained scoreless through most of the first half until CNU broke through in the 43rd minute with a goal from Lexi Hazelgrove, assisted by Katy Bronski. The Captains added to their lead in the 76th minute when AP Webb found the net off assists from Sara Ramsey and Hannah Taylor.

CNU controlled much of the match, outshooting CSB 27-2 and holding a 9-0 edge in corner kicks. Despite the pressure, first-year goalkeeper Claire McGrath stood out for the Bennies, tallying a season-high nine saves.

CSB now turns its attention to the home opener, hosting two matches on Sept. 6-7. The Bennies will take on Wartburg College at 3:30 p.m., on Saturday, followed by a matchup with No. 4 Emory at noon on Sunday.
