ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team (5-6, 2-3 MIAC), which had a 1-1 record in conference play last week, will wrap up its three-match road stretch on Wednesday, April 9, against Hamline (8-5, 1-3 MIAC) at 3 p.m. The match will take place at InnerCity Tennis in Minneapolis. Following this contest, CSB will return home to face Saint Mary's on April 12 at the Chang Tennis Complex in Collegeville.
Hamline Notes
Hamline, under the guidance of six-year head coach Spencer Jones, who played for the Pipers in the 1990s, enters the match with an overall record of 8-5 and a 1-3 mark in MIAC play. The Pipers most recently defeated Saint Mary's 5-4 on March 29, extending their winning streak to four matches. However, they also suffered losses to Carleton (9-0), St. Scholastica (9-0), and St. Olaf (7-2). In singles play, Hamline has a 45-33 record, while they are 22-17 in doubles competition.
Series Notes – CSB Leads Hamline, 32-2
The Bennies lead the all-time series against Hamline 32-2, with their most recent victory coming on February 24, 2024, in a dominant 9-0 result. CSB has won 12 consecutive matches in the series and holds a 16-1 home record, 14-1 road record, and a 28-1 conference mark. Hamline's only series win came in the first meeting on May 2, 1977, with a 6-3 victory.
Season Recap
CSB's season began on March 9 with a 7-2 loss to St. Olaf. The Bennies secured two singles victories, as first-year
Lila Collins won 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (12-10) at No. 5 and sophomore
Kate Perbix triumphed 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6. However, St. Olaf won four of the six singles matches and swept all three doubles contests. During their spring break trip to Florida, CSB earned victories over Western Connecticut State (7-0), St. Norbert College (4-3), and Crown College (7-0), but faced losses to UW-LaCrosse (7-0), SUNY-New Paltz (5-2), and Hamilton College (7-0).
At home, the Bennies lost 9-0 to Bethel on March 29 but bounced back with a 6-3 win over Macalester the following day. Against Macalester, CSB secured victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles and claimed singles wins by Yahn, Steinhaus, Collins, and Perbix at No. 3 to No. 6. On April 4, CSB fell to St. Catherine 8-1 but responded with a 7-2 win over Concordia-Moorhead on April 5. Senior
Sophia Jonas was key in the victory, winning both her No. 1 singles and doubles matches. She defeated Anna Hacker 6-1, 6-4 in singles and partnered with Perbix for an 8-0 doubles victory over Hacker and Emma Farder. Additionally, CSB won at No. 3 doubles with Marohl and Collins, who triumphed 8-2.
