SAINT PETER, Minn. -- Facing one of the top teams in NCAA Division III, the College of Saint Benedict tennis team (5-9 overall, 2-6 MIAC) fell to No. 35-ranked Gustavus Adolphus (19-7, 5-0 MIAC) by a score of 9-0 on Sunday, April 13 at the Brown Outdoor Courts.
The Gusties, a perennial conference powerhouse, remained unbeaten in MIAC play with the sweep, while the Bennies dropped their second straight match.
In doubles action:
In singles play, Gustavus won all six matches.
- Karina Elvestrom defeated Sophia Jonas at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
- Kaya De Bruin beat Ella Marohl, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
- At No. 3, Allyson Yahn fell 6-0, 6-0 to Molly Austin.
- Allison Szalay edged Anna Steinhaus at No. 4, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) in the closest match of the day.
- Lila Collins lost to Brooke Haddorff, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5.
- At No. 6 singles, Marie Labenski, previously undefeated this season, suffered her first loss to Ella De Young, 6-0, 6-1.
Despite the loss, the Bennies will have the opportunity to bounce back at home, with three consecutive matches coming up at the Chang Tennis Complex in Collegeville, Minn.:
- April 17 vs. St. Scholastica
- April 25 vs. Northwestern (Minn.)
- April 26 vs. UW-River Falls
