COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- Despite strong performances from
Lila Collins and
Marie Labenski in singles, and a doubles win from Labenski and
Ella Marohl, the College of Saint Benedict Tennis Team (5-8 overall, 2-5 MIAC) dropped a 6-3 decision to Saint Mary's University (13-8, 3-7 MIAC) on Saturday, April 12 at the Chang Tennis Complex.
The Bennies put up a tough battle, especially in several close matches that were decided in tiebreakers. In total, CSB dropped four tiebreakers, including three in singles play.
Labenski continued her unbeaten streak at No. 6 singles, improving to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Harsha Gangasani. Collins also earned a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles against Kathryn Stiegel, moving her season record to 8-4 overall and 5-2 in MIAC play.
In doubles, Collins and Marohl teamed up at No. 3 to notch an 8-3 win over Christina Jones and Olivia Molumby, bringing their record to 3-3 both overall and in conference play.
Other matches were tightly contested. At No. 1 singles,
Sophia Jonas fell in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) to Alli Laux. Marohl also came up short in a No. 2 singles tiebreaker, 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-1) to Elena Ruzevich. At No. 3, Emily Henderson edged
Allyson Yahn, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, while
Ryanna Steinhaus lost another tiebreaker at No. 4, 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) to Emily Dondelinger.
In doubles, Jonas and
Kate Perbix narrowly lost at No. 1, 8-7 (7-5), to Laux and Ruzevich. At No. 2, Dondelinger and Henderson defeated Yahn and Steinhaus, 8-4.
The Bennies return to action on Sunday, April 13, as they travel to Saint Peter, Minn., to take on Gustavus Adolphus.
