Morgan scores 22 to lead CSB Basketball to a fifth straight win with the 84-53 decision over St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. – Junior guard Megan Morgan led the College of Saint Benedict basketball team to an 84-53 road victory over St. Scholastica on Wednesday at Reif Gym.

Morgan scored 22 points and was among the season-best five CSB players to score in double figures, improving their record to 14-6 (9-4 MIAC), while securing their fifth consecutive win. St. Benedict's dominant performance also marked its highest point total of the season and earned a tie for third place in the MIAC with Hamline.

The result was a stark contrast to the teams' first meeting of the season, when the Bennies suffered a 74-51 loss at home to the Saints on Jan. 18 at home. On Wednesday, Saint Benedict turned the tables with a 31-point margin of victory, their largest of the year. The road victory was also fueled by solid defensive play, as CSB held its opponent to 64 or fewer points for the fifth consecutive game.

St. Ben's Head coach Mike Durbin praised his team's effort as the Bennies wrapped up a successful three-game road trip.

"When we are engaged, focused, and execute a game plan, we can be very good. It was an amazing performance," said Durbin, whose team will return home to face Concordia-Moorhead at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Claire Lynch Hall.

Morgan's stellar performance included shooting 7-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. She also contributed five rebounds and an assist, recording her 25th career double-digit scoring game.

Senior guard Sophia Jonas added 15 points, knocking down 3-of-6 three-pointers and adding three rebounds and three assists. Jonas now has 249 career three-pointers, just six behind Brooklyn Paulson of Saint Mary's (2018-23), who holds the all-time record at 255. Jonas also recorded her 60th career double-digit scoring game and her 50th game with three or more three-pointers made.

First-year point guard Lauren Arnold contributed 13 points, marking her seventh career double-digit performance. She was efficient, going 5-of-6 from the field and hitting her only three-pointer while also adding four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Tatum Findley, another first-year guard, came off the bench to score 12 points, hitting 5-of-7 shots from the field and making her lone three-pointer. Findley recorded her eighth double-digit game of the season. Junior forward Kira Young also reached double figures with 11 points and eight rebounds, shooting 4-of-5 from the field, including her only three-pointer. Young now has 16 career double-digit scoring games.

The Bennies were on fire from beyond the arc, recording double-digit three-pointers for the second consecutive game. They made 11-of-21 three-point attempts for a season-best 52.4 percent shooting. As a team, CSB shot 50.8 percent overall, making 32-of-63 shots, marking their second-best shooting performance of the season.

Defensively, Saint Benedict forced 19 turnovers and held St. Scholastica to just 40 percent shooting (20-of-50) from the field. The Bennies' defense was especially strong against the three-point line, limiting CSS to 4-of-17 shooting (23.5 percent). CSB capitalized on the turnovers, outscoring the Saints 20-2 in points off turnovers. The Bennies also had a 38-30 advantage in points in the paint and a 7-4 edge in second-chance points.

After trailing 9-2 early in the first quarter, Saint Benedict mounted a 12-4 run, capped by a three-pointer from Morgan, to take a 14-13 lead at the end of the first period. The Bennies shot 40 percent (6-of-15) in the opening frame, including 2-of-5 from three-point range. St. Scholastica shot 54.5 percent (6-of-11) but could not hold the lead.

In the second quarter, CSB shot 37.5 percent (6-of-16) but extended its lead, outscoring CSS 12-4 to take a 31-23 advantage into halftime.

The second half was all Saint Benedict. The Bennies shot an impressive 62.5 percent (20-of-32), including 6-of-9 from three-point range. In the third quarter, CSB went 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) from the field, adding 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, to outscore St. Scholastica 29-15, taking a commanding 60-38 lead heading into the final period.

Saint Benedict's offensive dominance continued in the fourth quarter, where they shot 64.3 percent (9-of-14), pushing their lead to 31 points with under a minute remaining. The Bennies capped off one of their most impressive performances of the year, securing the 84-53 win.
