Morgan scores 22 points but CSB Basketball falls to Concordia, 83-73

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- Despite a 22-point performance from Megan Morgan and 16 points from Sophia Jonas, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team (14-7, 9-5 MIAC) dropped an 83-73 home decision to Concordia-Moorhead (14-7, 9-5 MIAC) in a MIAC play on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Claire Lynch Hall.

With the loss, St. Ben's remains tied for fourth place in the MIAC with Concordia at 9-5 in league play. Both teams hold a 14-7 overall record this season. The Bennies will return home for their second consecutive home game when they face Macalester on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m.

Morgan, who scored 22 points for the second game in a row, has now reached 20 or more points in five career games. She shot 7-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc, and also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists. Morgan now has 26 double-digit scoring games in her career.

Jonas contributed 16 points, hitting 7-of-17 shots from the floor, including two three-pointers. She now has 251 career three-pointers, just five shy of the MIAC record of 255, set by Brooklyn Paulson of Saint Mary's from 2018-2023. Jonas also added four rebounds, two steals, and now has 61 career double-digit scoring games. With her performance, she has accumulated 1,089 points, ranking 14th all-time at CSB.

In addition to Morgan and Jonas, two other Bennies scored in double figures. Junior forward Kira Young posted 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals. She was 5-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Young now has 17 career double-digit scoring games. First-year guard Lauren Arnold also had 12 points, along with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Arnold now has eight double-digit scoring games.

Game Summary - 

The game saw eight lead changes and six tie scores, with Concordia ultimately benefiting from a 15-4 advantage in bench points and a shooting percentage edge. While the Bennies shot 40.9% (27-of-66), including 9-of-26 from three-point range, the Cobbers shot 51% (26-of-51) from the field and 34% (9-of-20) from three. Additionally, Concordia had a significant advantage at the free-throw line, converting 22-of-10 attempts. The Cobbers were led individually from Carlee Sieben (24 points) and Makayla Anderson (23 points).

CSB did lead in points off turnovers (16-to-9) and points in the paint (34-to-30), forcing 17 turnovers, but couldn't overcome Concordia's shooting performance. The Cobbers also out-rebounded the Bennies 37-26.

The first quarter saw CSB take an early 8-2 lead, but Concordia answered with a 14-1 run to close the quarter with a 16-11 lead. St. Ben's shot 5-of-14 from the field (35.7%) while the Cobbers were 5-of-11 (45.5%).

In the second quarter, CSB rallied, outscoring Concordia 19-15, and pulled within one at 31-30 at halftime. The Bennies shot 7-of-19 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from three-point range. Jonas contributed seven points in the quarter, including her 250th career three-pointer during a 5-0 run.

Concordia regained control in the third quarter, outscoring CSB, 18-14, behind 7-of-16 shooting (43.8%) and 4-of-6 from three-point range. As a result, the Cobbers took a 49-44 lead into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Concordia was nearly perfect, making 8-of-9 field goals (88.9%) and 16-of-17 free throws. Despite cutting the deficit to seven points late, CSB was unable to mount a full comeback. The Bennies shot 10-of-21 in the final quarter, including three three-pointers, but the Cobbers held on for the victory.
