Opsahl scores two goals but CSB Hockey falls to Concordia, 5-4

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Senior Aurora Opsahl scored two goals but the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (11-10-3, 8-8-1 MIAC) dropped a 5-4 decision to Concordia-Moorhead (7-17-0, 6-11-0) in MIAC play on Friday (Feb. 21)

With the loss, the Bennies falls to 11-10-3 overall and 8-8-1 in MIAC play and remain in sixth place. CSB has 23 MIAC points and trail St. Olaf, which has 25 MIAC points. St. Ben's will host Concordia at 6 p.m., on Saturday at Ritsche Arena. With a win and a St. Olaf loss, the Bennies can still earn a berth in the MIAC playoffs, which qualifies the top five teams in the conference standings. St. Olaf dropped a 4-2 decision to Bethel on Friday night.

Opsahl scored her eighth and ninth goals of the season and now has 17 points to lead CSB this year. With the two goals, she now has 39 career goals which moved her into fifth all-time at CSB, moving past Elli Marvin, 38, 2013-17. In her career, she has totaled 73 (39G, 34A) points, which also places her sixth all-time at CSB.

The Bennies had a 2-1 lead and then led 3-2 before Concordia tied it and took the lead in the final period.

St. Ben's opened the scoring 31 seconds into the first period when sophomore Emily Wendorf scored her third goal of the season and sixth of her career. Her unassisted goal helped CSB lead, 1-0. At 7:16 of the first period, Concordia's Memphis Mertens tied the game off assists from Sophia Hauer and Morgan Sauvageau.

The Bennies responded with senior Shauna Miller's unassisted goal at the 7:54 mark. Miller tallied her fourth goal of the season and 10th of her career. The Cobbers tied the game on a power play goal at 14:43 when Taylyn Cope scored off assists from Jerica Friese and Kaylie Zimmerman.

Then, Opsahl pushed CSB into a 3-2 lead at the 8:08 mark of the second period. Presley Kraemer assisted on the even strength goal. At 12:52 of the second period, Concordia's Sauvageau had an unassisted goal to tie the game at 3-3.

The Cobbers took their first lead of the game at 4:49 of the third period when Cope had her second goal of the season.

Opsahl responded with her second goal of the game, scoring on a power play tally at the 8:06 mark for a 4-4 tie. Senior Jenna Timm assisted on the play as she now has 37 career assists for sixth at CSB. She now has 14 points on the season (6G, 8A) which ranks third for the Bennies.

With 13:05, Concordia tallied its second power play goal as Abbey Reule provided the game-winning goal off assists by Mertens and Sauvageau.

Overall, CSB had a 35-to-25 edge in shots and won 37 of 61 faceoffs. Ava Stinnett took 15-of-21 faceoffs while Mia Lopez was successful on 14-of-17. Senior goalie Kate Moffat recorded 20 saves in the set-back.
