Sophia Jonas had 17 points while
Tatum Findley added 13 and
Megan Driste scored a career-best 12 points but the College of Saint Benedict (9-5, 4-3 MIAC) dropped an 80-68 MIAC road decision to Concordia-Moorhead (9-5, 4-3 MIAC) at the Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday (Jan. 15).
St. Benedict had a significant second half rally, charging back from 19 down to within six midway through the fourth quarter but the rally fell short in the setback.
St. Ben's, which will host St. Scholastica on Youth Day at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Claire Lynch Hall, fell to 4-3 in the MIAC, which leaves the Bennies tied for fifth in conference standings.
Jonas hit four three-pointers to lead the CSB in scoring with 17 points. She had her 54
th double-digit scoring game of his career. Jonas, who also had two rebounds, two steals and two assists, now has made three or more triples eight times this year and 47 times in his career. Jonas now has 230 in her career and has 987 career points.
First-year guard
Tatum Findley recorded her fifth double-digit game of the season with 13 points and added four rebounds and a steal. Driste had a career best 12 points while grabbing five rebounds. The Bennies also had nine points, six assists and four rebounds from first-year guard
Lauren Arnold and nine points from junior guard
Megan Morgan. In addition, junior forward
Kira Young had a team-high six rebounds.
Concordia, which was led by 24 points from Carlee Sieben, outscored CSB, 26-20, with points in the paint and had an 11-to-8 edge in points off turnovers. Concordia held important advantages in rebounds and shooting. The Cobbers had a 40-to-26 margin in rebounds while making 28-of-63 shots for 44.4 percent while CSB hit 22-of-57 shots for 38.6 percent. St. Ben's had an 8-to-6 margin in made threes but the Cobbers held an 18-to-16 margin in made free throws as they won their sixth in seven games.
Game Summary –
In the opening quarter, CSB made 5-of-13 field goals, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, but the Cobbers took a 20-16 lead by making 9-of-16 from the field for 56.3 percent. Driste led CSB with six points by making a pair of threes and Morgan had five points. CSB trailed 7-3 early before back-to-back threes from Morgan and Driste gave CSB a 12-10 lead at the 4:15 mark. Makayla Anderson scored three straight baskets late in the half to help Concordia to a 20-16 lead.
In the second quarter, Concordia opened on a 14-2 run to grab a 34-18 lead (6:42) and led, 44-30 at halftime. CSB made 10-of-31 shots in the opening half for 32.3 percent while the Cobbers hit a sizzling 17-of-33 field goals for 51.5 percent. Both teams made four triples. The Cobbers led, 39-20, before CSB closed to 39-27 with 2:15 left to play.
In the third quarter, Concordia held a 17-16 points edge to increase their lead to 61-45 at the break. After Concordia took a 49-32 lead at the 6:04 mark, CSB began a second half rally that would eventually cut the lead to six points in the fourth quarter.
The Bennies, which made 7-of-12 field goals for 58.33 percent in the final stanza, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, held a 23-19 margin in the quarter. CSB opened the fourth quarter on an 10-2 run to close within 63-55 at the 7:15 mark when Arnold made a basket. With a three-point play by Findley and a free throw from Driste, CSB cut the mark to 65-59 with 6:02 to play. However, CSB, which had rallied from down 19, could not draw any closer as their rally fell short in the road league setback.
