CSB Soccer falls to UW-Eau Claire, 2-0, in home opener

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – In the season opener for both teams, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (1-0) edged past the College of Saint Benedict (0-1), 2-0, in a nonconference match up at the CSB Outdoor Athletic Complex on Friday (August 30).

Saint Benedict had their all-time series lead with the Blugolds drop to 15-11-2 with the setback in the home opener. UW-Eau Claire earned a second straight win in the series. Next for CSB will be the second of four straight home games as they host UW-Stevens Point at 1 p.m., on Sunday, also at the CSB Outdoor Athletic Complex.

UW-EC scored a goal in both the first half and the second half to earn the win. The Blugolds, which had a 19-to-10 edge in shots, had a pair of goals from Johanna Thompson, who scored the game's first goal at the 21:35 mark off an assist from Molly Henderson. Thompson, who had five shots all on goal, then added a second goal at 75:25 off an assist from Ava Glenn. Elise Pinewski led all players with six shots.

The Bennies, which had three shots in the first half and seven in the second half, had two shots from Lucy Petschel, Ali Voss and Gabby Fernholz.
In corner kicks, UW-EC had a 5-3 mark over CSB, which 10 fouls to eight for the Blugolds.

In goal, Annie Walters had seven of the 12 saves by the Bennies in playing 60:32 in goal. Madisen Carter, who played the final 29:28 at goalkeeper for CSB, had five saves. For UW-EC, Kennedy Boll had seven goals in 90 minutes in the net.
