Schrubbe and Osland both tally two goals but CSB Lacrosse falls to UW-LaCrosse

LACROSSE, Wis. – Despite two goals from both first-year Lizzie Schrubbe and sophomore Emma Osland, the College of Saint Benedict lacrosse team suffered a 15-7 loss in nonconference play to the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse (4-0) on Saturday (March 9).

The Bennies, which will travel to face the Milwaukee School of Engineering for an 11 a.m., contest on Sunday, March 10, dropped to 0-2 on the season. UW-LaCrosse recorded a fourth consecutive victory to open the season.

Schrubbe, who had a team-high eight shots on the day, now has four goals on the season and a team-high 13 shots. Osland recorded her first two goals of the season. Also scoring for CSB were first-years Emma Nelson, Breya Sawyer, and Emma Halweg, who all scored their first goals of the season.

CSB opened up a 5-4 lead after the first quarter before UW-LaCrosse gained the momentum and control. UW-L outscored CSB, 4-1, in the second quarter; 5-0 in the third quarter; and 2-1 in the fourth quarter to take a 15-7 win.

UW-LaCrosse was led in scoring by Ava Schultz and Grace Willmott with four goals each while Megan Maloney had two. Schiltz and Maloney also had a pair of assists.

In the match-up, CSB was 10-of-19 on clears while the Eagles were successful on 20-of-26. In terms of shots, CSB had a 32-to-28 edge, including 10-to-5 and 9-to-8 margins in the opening two quarters and 8-to-7 in the fourth quarter. In shots on goal, the Eagles had a 22-to-18 margin. UW-L also had an edge in grounds balls, 24-to-20, and a 14-to-12 advantage in draw controls. In free positions shots, CSB had 10 to four for UW-LaCrosse.

Game Summary –
Bennies opened the scoring early in the first period on a goal by Nelson for a 1-0 lead. UW-L responded with three straight goals for a 3-1 advantage. After Schrubbe scored at 10:45 of the first quarter to draw within, 3-2, Schiltz scored the first of her four goals at 9:21 of the first quarter and the Eagles led, 4-2. Saint Benedict responded with three straight goals as Osland (8:08), Schrubbe (5:20) and Sawyer (3:04) tallied scores for a 5-4 lead.

When Osland opened the scoring in the second quarter at the 14:00 mark, the Bennies led, 6-4.

From that point on, UW-LaCrosse took control with nine straight goals for a 13-6 lead. In that run Schiltz had three goals. CSB ended the scoring run by the Eagles when Halweg's goal at 6:16 of the fourth quarter reduced the lead to 13-7. Then, the Eagles' Grace Willmott closed the scored with two straight goals for the final margin.
