Hackley and Schrubbe lead CSB Lacrosse to 19-4 road win over MSOE

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Sophomore Sami Hackley and first-year Lizzie Schrubbe both scored four goals to lead the College of Saint Benedict lacrosse team (1-3) to its first win of the season with a 19-4 road nonconference decision over the Milwaukee School of Engineering (0-1) on Sunday (March 10).
 
In the first-ever meeting between the schools, CSB picked up the win to move to 1-3 on the season and face another road test against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (1-1) at 5 p.m., on Wednesday, March 13 at Simpson Field in Eau Claire.
 
"It was good to get our first win of the season. The team continued to come together over the weekend," said CSB second-year head coach Patrick Crandall. "It was good to see some of our new players work together and play with our returners. Chloe Lewis had a solid game today in goal while Emma Schrepfer anchored the defense and created a lot of turnovers."
 
Crandall also noted the performance of Schrubbe and Hackley, who led the offense. Schrubbe had a program-best nine game points after scoring four goals with five assists and taking eight shots, including seven on goal in the victory. Schrubbe now has eight goals and five assists on the season with a team-high 13 points. Hackley had four goals and an assist for five points with a season-team-best five draw controls and four ground balls. Now with 41 career goals, Hackley recorded her 11th multi-goal game and  fifth career four-goal game or better.   
 
"Lizzie Schrubbe had another great game to lead the team in points.  Emma Nelson stepped up offensively and got the hat trick while Sami Hackley had another solid offensive game.  Grace Fitzgibbons also a great game offensively and contributed significantly on the draw," said Crandall.
 
For the first time in her career, first-year Emma Nelson had a hat trick with three goals and added an assist with five ground balls and a drawn control. CSB had five goals players with multi-goals, including sophomore Ella Steinke, who had two goals and two assists with five ground balls. Sophomore Grace Fitzgibbons had two goals while first-year Tess Cavanaugh recorded her first career goal. First-year standouts Emma Halweg and Breya Sawyer both scored their second goal of the season. Lewis registered three saves and allowed just a season-low four goals in 60 minutes in goal.

The Bennies dominated play on the offensive end with a 44-to-11 margin in shots. CSB had a 12-to-5 shots edge in the first quarter followed by 15-to-3 in the second quarter and 9-to-1 and 8-to-2 in the final two quarters. The Bennies forced 24 turnovers and were successful on 17-of-19 clears with a 32-to-15 margin on ground balls and 15-to-11 margin in draw controls.
 
Game Summary -
 
After taking a 3-2 lead after one quarter, Saint Benedict, led by three goals by Hackley, took control against MSOE with a 9-to-1 advantage in the second period and and a 12-3 lead at halftime. CSB controlled the second half with a 4-0 margin in the third quarter and 3-1 in the fourth quarter for its first win of the season.
 
MSOE opened the scoring at 12:11 of the first quarter before Steinke's goal at 9:49 started things for CSB. Schrubbe (8:01, 1st Q) and Halweg (5:06, 1st Q) pushed CSB to a 3-1 lead. Up 3-2, Hackley scored consecutive goals (13:40, 12:51) in the second quarter before Fitzgibbons' second goal of the season (10:56) gave CSB a 6-2 lead. After MSOE answered, Cavanaugh started a 12-goal run by the Bennies by registering her first career goal off an assist from Steinke (6:50). 
 
Steinke's second goal (4:31, 2nd Q) gave CSB an 8-3 lead in the second quarter. Then the Bennies added four more goals, including by Schrubbe (2:23), Hackley (1:48), Nelson (1:09) and Fitzgibbons (:21) for a 12-3 lead. In the third quarter Nelson (14:34), Schrubbe (12:30), Hackley (8:32) and Nelson (:18) pushed CSB's lead to 16-3. Sawyer's second goal of the season (13:17) opened scoring in the fourth quarter before MSOE ended CSB;s 12-goal run with Payton Siebert's second goal of the game (9:20). Oswald (6:23) had her third goal of the season and Schrubbe tallied her eighth (1:08) as the Bennies closed out the scoring.
