Carla Meyer scored 15 points and
Sophia Jonas tied the school's career three-point record as the College of Saint Benedict basketball team (13-8, 11-6 MIAC) recorded a 72-58 road MIAC win over St. Olaf (4-17, 3-14 MIAC) on Wednesday (Feb. 7).
CSB, which sits in fourth place in the MIAC with a 11-6 record, has an overall record of 13-8. The Bennies, which have won four of their past five games, are just a game out of third place (St. Catherine, 12-5 MIAC – 16-6 overall). Next up for CSB will be a road game against No. 5 and league leader Gustavus (19-2, 15-1 MIAC) at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 10.
In total, the Bennies had four players reach double digits as Meyer led the way with 15 points (68
th career double-digit scoring game), while grabbing six rebounds, registering three steals with two assists. Meyer, who hit 6-of-12 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range, now has 1,145 points for 12
th all-time at CSB. She also ranks sixth in career assists with 285 and, with three triples has 151 and is tied for fifth all-time at CSB with Amy Stifter (2007-11).
Jonas, a junior guard had 11 points, including making 3-of-3 shots from three-point range. With the trio of threes, Jonas has tied Ashley Brown (107 games, 2000-04) for the career lead in three-pointers at Saint Benedict. Jonas, who had her 36
th career double-digit scoring game, has 59 threes this season and her 60
th will give her the career record to go with the season mark of 84 she set a year ago. Incredibly, Jonas, who is 186-of-511 on three-pointers for 36.4 percent, has tied the program record in just her 71
st career game at CSB.
The Bennies also had 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and a career-tying four blocked shots (Grinnell, Dec. 10) from senior forward
Lydia Hay. Sophomore forward
Kira Young had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds while sophomore guard
Megan Morgan supplied nine points and five rebounds.
After the teams were tied at 11-11 in the first quarter, CSB shot 64.5 percent from the field and outscored St. Olaf, 27-17, in the second quarter for a 38-to-28 half-time lead. The Bennies had a 15-to-13 edge in the third quarter for a 50-38 lead. Saint Benedict also had a 19-to-17 edge in the fourth quarter for the 14-point win (72-58).
While St. Olaf had a 40-to-34 edge in points in the paint and a 15-to-3 margin in second chance points, St. Ben's used its overall shooting edge of 46.8 percent (29-of-62) and 37.9 percent from three-point range (11-of-29) to earn the win. CSB had an 11-to-2 edge in made three-pointers, which provided a 27-point differential. St. Olaf, which had 13 points from Paige Yagodinski and 12 by Ziling Zhen, was 25-of-66 from the field for 37.9 percent and just 2-of-11 from distance for 18.2 percent.
Game Summary
In the opening quarter, Meyer scored seven points, including a three-pointer, as the Bennies were tied at 11-11 with the Oles. CSB opened by missing 1-of-9 field goals and finished the quarter at 4-of-17 for 23.5 percent, including 2-of-9 from three-point range at 22.2 percent.
In the second quarter, Saint Benedict found its shooting touch, which included a 17-6 scoring run to open the quarter. In that run, CSB knocked down 7-of-10 field goals for 64.7 percent and 5-of-9 triples. With the run, the Bennies took a 38-28 lead into half-time after outscoring St. Olaf, 27-to-17, in the quarter. With a triple from Morgan, her second of the game, CSB led, 28-17. St. Olaf responded with a 7-2 run to draw within, 30-24, at the 2:07 mark. In the final 1:12 of the quarter, Meyer, who led CSB with 10 points, and
Morgan Ebel had triples to give CSB a double-digit halftime lead.
With a 9-0 run, keyed by six points from Hay and a three-point play by Morgan, CSB opened a game-high 19-point lead at 47-28 over the Oles at the 7:04 mark in the third quarter. The Bennies had a 49-31 lead on a jumper by Young before St. Olaf rallied at home with six straight points to draw within 49-37 to 2:37 to play. At the break, CSB, which had a 15-to-13, scoring margin, took a 53-41 lead. In the quarter, CSB hit 7-of-13 shots from the field for 53.8 percent while St. Olaf was 6-of-18 for 33.3 percent.
After a basket by Hay gave CSB a 55-41 advantage early in the fourth quarter, the Oles scored four straight points to cut the lead to 10 points. A pull-up jumper and a three-pointer from Jonas helped CSB to a 60-45 lead the 6:46 mark. At the 5:03 mark, sophomore guard
Megan Driste drained a three-pointer followed by Meyer's driving lay-up for a 68-50 advantage. Jonas tied the school's career three-point record with her third three of the game for a 71-52 lead with 3:56 to play.
