ST PETER, Minn.- Senior forward
Lydia Hay scored 20 points for the second time in her career but the College of Saint Benedict (13-9, 11-7 MIAC) dropped an 96-66 MIAC decision to No. 5 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College (20-2, 16-1 MIAC) on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Gus Young Court in St. Peter, Minn.
Despite the loss, CSB has clinched a berth in the MIAC playoffs as the Bennies stand 11-7 in the conference and 13-9 overall. At the conclusion of the regular season, the top six teams in the league standings qualify for the postseason playoffs.
With two regular season games to play, the Bennies are tied with Bethel for fourth place with an 11-7 record and face the Royals in a road MIAC game on Wednesday, Feb. 14 in Arden Hills, Minn. Gustavus leads the MIAC by one game with a 16-1 record (20-2 overall) as Concordia is 16-2 (17-4 overall) and in second place. In third place is St. Catherine at 13-5 (17-6 overall) with Hamline in sixth at 9-9 (11-11 overall). Augsburg (8-12 overall 7-10 in the MIAC) and St. Scholastica (10-12 overall and 7-11 overall) also have a shot at sixth place and a playoff berth.
Against Gustavus, Hay recorded her second 20-point game of the season and her career. She was 7-of-11 from the field, including 1-of-2 from three-point range, while grabbing four rebounds and recording two blocks. Hay, who was named MIAC offensive player of the week/St. Cloud Orthopedics Athlete of the week on Feb. 5, now has two blocks or more in nine of the past 14 games.

Sophia Jonas set the school record for made three-pointers in a career at 188 as she surpassed the former record holder Ashley Brown (186, 2000-04). She hit the record-setting three-pointer (187) at 5:59 of the fourth quarter and later added another triple as she has 188 triples in 72 career games. She also owns the single-season CSB and MIAC record of 84 threes a year ago.
Also joining Hay in double-digits was senior guard
Carla Meyer, who had 10 points with her 69
th double-digit scoring game. She also had six rebounds and five assists with a steal. Meyer now has 1,155 career points in 81 career games and has moved into 11
th on the CSB career chart as she surpassed Kim Krize, who had 1,149 points in 78 games from 1985-88.
For the Gusties, Emma Kniefel led three players in double digits with 16 points while adding six assists and six rebounds. Also, for GAC, Syd Hauger added 15 points and Kylie Baranick had 13 points.
The Gusties, which led from start to finish, opened a 22-12 lead after one quarter and extended the advantage to 46-25 at halftime with a 24-to-13 second quarter margin. Then, GAC outscored CSB, 27-to-17 in the third quarter, and, 24-to-23 in the fourth quarter of the 96-66 win.
Key to the win for GAC was its accuracy from the field as they hit 38-of-55 shots for 69.1 percent, including 10-of-18 from three-point range for 55.6 percent. As a result, GAC had a 46-to-16 margin in the paint and a 38-to-15 advantage in bench points.
The Bennies shot just 39.2 percent from the field as they made just 20-of-51 field goals. CSB was 6-for-22 from three-point range shooting for just 27.3 percent. Aside from the difference in shooting, GAC had a 32-to-16 rebound edge, including 8-to-4 in offensive rebounds, which led to a 14-to-2 advantage in second chance points.
