ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior forward
Corrine Brown scored a pair of goals to lead the College of Saint Benedict Hockey Team (10-12-2, 6-9-2 MIAC) to a 6-1 road MIAC win over St. Catherine (6-17-1, 2-14-1 MIAC) on Friday (Feb. 16).
With the victory, CSB moved to 10-12-2 on the season overall and sit 6-9-2 in the MIAC for seventh place with 20 conference points. The Bennies now have 10 wins in a season for the ninth time in program history. St. Catherine dropped to 2-14-1 in league play with a 6-17-1 overall mark.
After St. Catherine scored the first goal of the game, CSB scored three goals in both the second and third periods to rally past the Wildcats and record the 6-1 victory. With the win CSB now leads the all-time series 23-22-8.
"Our team played exceptionally well in the second and third periods," said CSB head coach
Lindsay Macy. "We are looking forward to seeing this team bring the energy, attitude and effort tomorrow," said Macy, whose team will host St. Catherine in the second part of the home-and-home series at 6 p.m., on Senior Night on Saturday (Feb. 17). Brown, along with
Jamie Benzie and
Abby Nelson will be honored following the game tomorrow.
CSB scored six or more goals for the third time this season and now have totaled at least five goals six times this season – all victories. Saint Benedict recorded a high of eight goals in the 8-0 win over Dubuque on Dec. 8. In the history of the program, CSB has five goals or more 93 times, resulting in 88 wins against just five losses or ties. This is the first time since 2014-15 that the Bennies have totaled six or more five goal or better games.
Game Summary
In the opening period, the Wildcats opened the scoring with a goal by Lilly Gillespie (4
th, season) at 11:19. Paige Loidolt (1
st, season) and Samantha Lackmann (2
nd, season) assisted on the play. After that the Bennies took control, led by play of Brown, with the offensive taking advantage of opportunities and the defense shutting down the Wildcats.
In the opening 7:05 of the second period, Brown scored two goals as CSB took a 2-1 lead. A power-play goal by Brown, who tallied her fifth goal of the season and 16
th of her career at the 3:36 mark, tied the game at 1-1. Junior
Ava Stinnett (4
th, season) assisted on the goal.
Brown, who was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, had her second goal of the game, sixth of the season and 17
th of her career at 7:05. On the goal, junior forward
Aurora Opsahl had her seventh assist of the season and 20
th point while
Sydney Hunst had her fifth assist as CSB led, 2-1.
Sophomore forward
Presley Kraemer tallied a goal – her fourth of the season - at 12:05 for a 3-1 lead.
Mia Lopez (2
nd, season) and
Shauna Miller (4
th, season) had assists on the even-strength goal in the second period.
CSB added three more goals in the opening 8:44 of the third period. At 4:58, sophomore forward
Chloe Lewis tallied her third goal of the season on a power play conversion. The Bennies added an even-strength, unassisted goal from first-year
Emily Wendorf, who tallied her third goal of the season at the 8:06 mark. Just 38 seconds later, junior forward
Emma Rooks recorded her 10
th goal of the season and 20
th of her career with an unassisted tally at 8:44.
Overall, the Bennies controlled action as they had a 33-to-13 shots advantage over the Wildcats. CSB had a 15-to-5 margin in the first period and edges of 10-to-5 and 8-to-3 in the second and third periods, respectively. CSB was also 2-of-3 on power plays which gives the Bennies 11 on the season. The Bennies also owned a 57.6 percent (34 wins in 59 attempts) win percentage in face-offs. A. Stinnett was dominate with 15-of-19 wins for 78.9 percent on face-offs with Miller at 57.1 percent on 8-of-14 wins.
Junior goaltender
Kate Moffat allowed just one goal while recording 12 saves. Moffat now has 12 career wins, including seven this season, and is tied with Abbie Helminen (2007-11) for fourth all-time at CSB in career wins. With her assist Opsahl now has 56 career points, which is tied for eighth all-time with Anna Richardson (2000-04).
