Corrine Brown had goals but it was not enough as the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (9-12-2, 5-9-2 MIAC) dropped a 6-3 road decision to St. Olaf (10-13-0, 4-12-0 MIAC) in MIAC action on Saturday (Feb. 10).
CSB, which moved to 5-9-2 for seventh in the MIAC with 17 conference points, is 9-12-2 overall. The Bennies had a two-game winning streak end as they will conclude the season with a home-and-home series against St. Catherine on Feb. 16-17. CSB hosts the Wildcats at 6 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 17, in the regular season finale.
The Bennies opened up a 1-0 lead on a goal by Brown, who had her fourth goal of the season and 14
th of her career, at the 3:10 mark of the opening period. Opsahl, who had three points in the night, added her third assist in the past two games.
St. Olaf, who had not scored in five periods, answered with four second-period goals for a commanding 4-1 lead. It all started with a goal by Solvei Berg-Messerole, who had her 12
th goal of the season on a power play tally at the 8:10 mark. Molly Terebayza (9th, season) and Hannah Fritz (1st, season) had assists on the score. At 10:00 of the period, St. Olaf's Rachel Wieland had an even strength goal for a 2-1 lead off an assist by Maya Ballard (1
st, season).
Just seven seconds later, St. Olaf extended the lead to 3-1 when Terebayza had her first of three goals on the night with an even-strength tally. Iona Welsch (5
th, season) and Berg-Messerole (15
th, season) had assists on the play. Terebayza added another goal at 14:59 of the second period as her 13
th goal of the season came on a power play off assists by Welsch (6
th, season) and Julia Larson (2
nd, season).
CSB stopped the St Olaf run as Opsahl had her 13
th goal of the season at the 15:34 mark of the second period to draw CSB within 4-2. Brown assisted on the play with her team-leading 13
th assist. Then at 14:16 of the third period, CSB cut the lead to 4-3 when Stinnett tallied her 13
th goal of the year on an even-strength goal as junior forward
Emma Rooks assisted (4
th, season).
However, the momentum swung back to the Oles. In the final 1:59, St. Olaf scored twice including a power play goal by Terebayza, whose 14
th goal of the year was assisted by Berg-Messerole (16
th, season) and Welsch (7th, season). Then, Berg-Messerole tallied her second goal of the night and 13
th of the season on an empty net goal at 19:58 for a 6-3 lead and a split of the home-and-home series.
Stinnett, who has 25 career goals, and Opsahl, who has 30 career goals, lead CSB with 13 goals on the season. Opsahl's 30 career goals ranks ninth all-time at CSB as she moved past Mollie Wise (2016-20). Brown increased her career assist total to 31 and into a tie for seventh all-time with Susan Engel (2001-05).
CSB had a 41-to-27 advantage in shots, including a 17-to-10 margin in the third period and both 12-to-9 and 12-to-8 in the first and second periods. While CSB was 0-of-2 on power plays, the Oles converted 3-of-5. St. Olaf also had won 33-of-63 face-offs for 54.1 percent. The Bennies were led by
Shauna Miller who won 12-of-18 face-offs.
