ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team (6-3-3), which had goals from four different players, including
Skylar Salscheider's first career goal, finished in a 4-4 overtime draw with UW-Superior (4-6-2) in nonconference hockey on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at Ritsche Arena. UW-Superior recorded a 2-0 shootout decision after neither team was able to score in overtime.
The Bennies now sit 6-3-3 on the season with the Christmas break ahead. CSB will return to the ice against the Milwaukee School of Engineering in a home game on Jan. 11 at 6 p.m.,, before the MIAC schedule continues with a home and away series with St. Catherine on Jan. 17-18.
St. Ben's led twice tonight at 2-0 in the first period and 4-3 late in the third period. It was the third time the teams have played this year with the last two games resulting in overtime shootouts which the Yellowjackets have won twice, 2-0.
In the opening four minutes of the contest, CSB had a 2-0 lead on even strength goals. At 1:29 of the first period, junior center
Mia Lopez recorded the third goal of the season off assists from seniors
Emma Rooks and
Jenna Timm, who had her fourth assist of the season and 33
rd of her career. With 33 assists, Timm is now tied with Elli Marvin for sixth all-time in program history.
About three minutes later, Rooks made it 2-0 with her third goal of the year and 23
rd of her career. Lopez and senior forward
Aurora Opsahl had assists on the score.
UW-Superior was able to get on the board at 12:28 of the first period on Kailey Swerhun's third goal of the season as the Yellowjackets drew within, 2-1. UW Superior's Darbie Mattson had her third assist of the season.
At 14:26 of the second period, UW-Superior took advantage of a power play with Kaylin Garner recording her sixth goal of the season to tie the contest at 2-2.
The Yellowjackets took a 3-2 lead at 8:49 of the third period on Ashton Parnell's second goal of the season, which was assisted by Swerhun (7
th assist of the year).
The Bennies tied the game at 3-3 as Salscheider recorded her first career goal at the 13:13 mark. She was assisted on the play by first-year forward
Camryn Hargreaves, who had her third assist of the season. Then, CSB took the lead 37 seconds later at 13:50 when junior
Presley Kraemer tallied her second goal of the season on a power play opportunity. Opsahl had her second assist of the night and fifth of the season.
Ava Stinnett also had an assist on the play, which was her third of the season and 26
th of her career. With Opsahl's second assist, she now has 63 career points, which placed her seventh all-time in program history.
UW-Superior answered with the tying goal at 16:09 when Emma Booth recorded her third goal of the season. Taylee Marks had her second assist of the season on the play. In overtime, neither team tallied a goal which forced a shootout won by the Yellowjackets, 2-0.
CSB had a 46-to-35 shots advantage overall, including 8-to-4 in overtime. Both teams converted a power play goal.
In face-offs, CSB won 49-of-83 face-offs for a 59 percent win rate.
Ava Stinnett won 14-of-22 face-offs for 63.6 percent and
Mia Lopez was successful on 13-of-19 for 68.4 percent.
