WINONA, Minn. -- Sophomore
Kali Jones recorded her 21st career double-double, tallying 12 kills and 12 digs to lead the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (11-11, 7-3 MIAC) to a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-20, 25-20) over Saint Mary's (9-19, 0-10 MIAC) in road MIAC action on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
With the victory, the Bennies extended their winning streak to three games and claimed their eighth win in the last 10 games. Saint Benedict moved into a tie with Augsburg for fourth place in the MIAC standings, holding a 7-3 conference record. St. Ben's, which has secured a spot in the MIAC playoffs, now sits at 11-11 overall with one regular-season contest remaining. The Bennies will host St. Olaf on Senior Day at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Claire Lynch Hall.
Jones, who surpassed 500 career kills with her performance (now at 505), finished with 12 kills on 30 attacks for a .333 hitting percentage. She also contributed 12 digs and two blocks. Sophomore
Kate Stadum added nine kills on 21 attempts (.238 hitting percentage), while junior
Mackenzie Knofczynski also posted nine kills on 21 attacks with a .333 hitting percentage and two blocks. Senior setter
Audrey Spolidoro, the reigning MIAC Specialist of the Week, dished out 35 assists and added seven digs. Spolidoro's career assists total now stands at 3,326, and her assists per set this season increased to 9.90.
As a team, CSB hit .208, recording 44 kills on 130 attempts. The Bennies finished with 41 assists, five service aces, 59 digs, and three total blocks. Saint Mary's had 34 kills, 33 assists, four service aces, and 55 digs.
In first set, Saint Benedict rallied from a 23-19 deficit, scoring six consecutive points to claim a 25-23 victory. Jones and Knofczynski were key to the late-set surge, and the Bennies hit .209 with 14 kills on 43 attacks in the set.
In the second set, the Bennies jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Saint Mary's responded with an 11-6 run to take a one-point lead. Down by a point, CSB regained its rhythm, scoring four straight points to go up 14-11. The Bennies had a 7-6 run, building a 21-17 lead before closing out the set at 25-20.
St. Benedict trailed 3-0 in the third set but responded with a 14-8 run to take a three-point advantage. The Bennies finished the match strong, hitting .262 with 17 kills on 42 attacks to seal the sweep with a 25-20 set win as they improved to 7-3 in the MIAC.
