Hargreaves scores twice but CSB Hockey falls to UW-Superior, 5-4

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team (0-2) suffered a narrow 5-4 loss to UW-Superior (2-1) in a nonconference road game on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Despite strong individual performances, including two goals from Camryn Hargreaves and one each from Chloe Lewis and Jorja Jusczak, the Bennies lost a closely contested game.

Hargreaves, a first-year forward from Minnetrista, Minn., scored her first two career goals, while Jusczak, a first-year from Moose Lake, Minn., also netted her first career goal. Lewis, a senior, scored her seventh career goal in the loss.

The game opened with UW-Superior taking the lead on a short-handed goal by Veda Roeske at 6:32 of the first period. CSB responded with Jusczak's equalizer at 11:39, assisted by Emily Wendorf and Morgan Cromwell. However, the Yellowjackets struck twice more before the period ended, including another short-handed goal, this time by Ashton Parnell, and an even-strength tally by Avery Olenik, giving UW-Superior a 3-1 advantage after the first frame.

In the second period, Hargreaves scored her first career goal just 36 seconds in, cutting the lead to 3-2. UW-Superior regained a two-goal lead with a goal from MacLean at 3:21, but Lewis answered with a power-play goal at 5:27, assisted by Shae Stinnett and Skylar Salscheider, making it 4-3. Hargreaves then scored again at 13:55, assisted by Wendorf and Mia Lopez, to tie the game at 4-4. However, UW-Superior regained the lead at 16:10 when Kailey Swenhun scored the game-winner, which would prove to be the decisive goal.

Despite strong efforts in the third period, neither team managed to score, and the 5-4 scoreline held. UW-Superior outshot the Bennies 27-19 overall, including a 10-3 margin in the third period. CSB went 1-for-3 on the power play, while UW-Superior dominated the faceoff circle, winning 29 of 49 draws (59.2%).

In goal, Saint Ben's Ellynor Haack made 18 saves in 40 minutes, while Kate Moffat had four saves in relief over the final 20 minutes.

Saint Ben's and UW-Superior will meet again on Tuesday, Nov. 12 on the Bennies' home ice at Ritsche Arena in St. Cloud, Minn.
