ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Senior goalie
Kate Moffat and goals from five different players led the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (2-2-1, 2-0-0 MIAC) to a 5-0 win over St. Scholastica (0-5-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) in the Bennies' MIAC home opener.
With the victory, CSB evened its overall record at 2-2-1 and won its second straight MIAC game to sit 2-0-0 and in a tie for first place in the conference standings with Gustavus and Augsburg. The five goals scored was a season-high for St. Ben's. Next for CSB will be an away and home MIAC matchup with St. Olaf on Nov. 22-23.
Moffat recorded her fifth career shutout with her performance tonight against St. Scholastica. In 124:33 on the ice in two wins over the Saints this weekend, she allowed just one goal as CSB took a 2-1 overtime win on the road on Friday before the 5-0 win at home tonight. After recording 32 saves in the 5-0 win, she has 78 on the season and an .886 saves percentage. Moffat was also part of a defense that held CSS to 0-4 on power plays.
Senior forward
Aurora Opsahl opened the scoring for CSB at 18:38 of the first period on a power play goal with assists from
Shauna Miller and
Jenna Timm, who had the 31
st of her career. Opsahl now has 31 career goals in her time as a Bennie, a mark that ranks ninth all-time at CSB. Timm's 31 assists ranks tied for seventh all-time with Susan Engel from 2001-05.
In the second quarter, the Bennies took control with a pair of goals for a 3-0 lead. At 11:42 of the second period,
Ella Tuccitto had her first goal at CSB with assists from
Chloe Lewis and
Shae Stinnett on the even strength tally. Then, Lewis added her second goal of the season at 13:40 of the period for a 3-0 lead. Tuccitto and Stinnett provided assists on the play.
In the final period, CSB added two more goals, including the second of the season from first-year
Jorja Jusczak at 6:40. She was assisted on the play by
Emily Wendorf and
Camryn Hargreaves. The Bennies closed out the scoring when first-year
Peyton LeMieur scored her first career goal off an assist from
Skylar Salscheider on an even strength goal.
As shown by its goal-scoring, the Bennies controlled play on the offensive end with a 62-to-47 edge in shots, including a 40-to-32 margin in shots on goal. CSB also won 39-of-67 faceoffs or 58.2 percent. Miller was successful on 15-of-25 faceoffs for 60 percent with Lewis winning 9-of-16 for 56.3 percent and
Mia Lopez, 9-of-17 for 52.9 percent.
