DULUTH, Minn. – Junior forward
Mia Lopez scored her first career goal with 26 seconds left in overtime to lift the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (1-2-1, 1-0 MIAC) to a 2-1 overtime road victory against St. Scholastica (0-4-0, 0-1-0 MIAC) as the teams opened MIAC play on Friday afternoon.
St. Ben's, which was involved in its second straight overtime contest, moved to 1-2-1 on the season with the win. The Bennies will now host St. Scholastica on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m., at Ritsche Arena in the home MIAC opener.
The Bennies were led on offense by a pair of juniors who both scored their first goal of the season. For Lopez, her game-winning shot in overtime was an even strength goal off assists from senior
Jenna Timm and sophomore
Ella Tuccitto. Timm and Tuccitto both recorded their first assists of the season. However, Timm's assist was the 30
th of her career.
Junior
Shauna Miller opened the scoring for CSB which took a 1-0 lead at 8:45 of the first period. Miller, who had her seventh career goal, tallied an even strength goal off an assist from first-year
Camryn Hargreaves.
The game remained 1-0 until the Saints tied the game late in the third period when Hanley Block scored at 16:43 of the third period on a power play goal. She was assisted on the play by Hannah Martin and Lyndi Schubert.
Overall, the Bennies had a huge edge in shots by a 47-to-27 edge including 13-to-6 in the opening period and 18-to-6 in the second stanza. After CSS had a 14-to-10 margin in shots in the third period, CSB controlled overtime with six shots to just one by the Saints. In faceoffs, CSB won 63.6 percent with a 49-to-28 edge. Miller was successful on 77.3 percent of her faceoffs (17-to-5) while Lopez won 13-of-19 faceoffs.
Chloe Lewis was successful on 17-of-32 faceoffs.
The Bennies had a strong performance in goal from senior
Kate Moffat, who allowed just one goal and had 26 saves, including 13 in the third period.
On power plays, CSB was 0-of-4 with CSS, 1-of-4.
