Game Preview -- CSB Soccer set for road test at Concordia-Moorhead on Wednesday

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team (4-4-4, 1-3-2 MIAC) is facing a road MIAC test against Concordia (7-4-, 3-3 MIAC) in Moorhead, Minn., on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The Bennies moved to 4-4-4 and 1-3-2 in the MIAC with a 1-0 win over Gustavus on Saturday as Alli Voss scored her sixth goal of the season and Annie Waters recorded her fourth shutout – 10th of her career. Meanwhile, Concordia has lost to Augsburg, 2-1, and Saint Mary's, 1-0 after opening the season with a 7-2 record. They had a 1-0 win over Hamline on Oct. 1 and sit 3-3 in MIAC play.

St. Benedict started the season strong, securing three wins in their first five matches, with notable victories including a thrilling 3-2 win over UW-Stevens Point and a 3-1 triumph against UW-Oshkosh, where senior forward Alli Voss netted a hat trick. They also achieved a 1-0 victory over Central College but have faced difficulties recently, resulting in ties against Wartburg (1-1) and Hamline (0-0), alongside losses to Saint Mary's (2-1), Augsburg (1-0), and St. Catherine (3-0). Then, CSB had a big win against Gustavus on Oct. 12. Both Voss and Annie Waters have garnered MIAC weekly honors this season.

Concordia Overview
With head coach Rebecca Quimby, who is in her 7th season, the Cobbers have a 7-4 record. The seventh coach at Concordia, she joined the program after serving as an assistant coach at Youngstown (State) Ohio. This season, the Cobbers are averaging 1.73 goals per game, with .596 shots on goal percentage. Concordia has held opponents to 0.82 goals per game and have averaged 12.7 shots per game. Both Kara Ellis and Reese Christ have scored four goals to lead the way. Emily Larsen leads the team with five assists. In goal Kaitlin Petrich has allowed 0.83 goals per game and has 58 saves with a .866 save percentage.

Series History
This match marks the 48th meeting between the two teams, with the Bennies holding a 32-15 overall record, including a 20-9 record at home. At Concordia, CSB is 12-5 and sits 27-12 in MIAC play. In the first ever matchup, CSB dropped a 2-1 decision on Sept. 29, 1984. The Bennies have won 7-of-10 but dropped a 2-0 decision at home on Oct. 30, 2023. Early in the year in 2023, CSB defeated the Cobbers, 2-0, on Oct. 11, also at St. Joseph.

With 182 total shots and 42 corner kicks, senior Alli Voss leads the squad with six goals (ranking 7th in the MIAC) and three assists, while sophomore Avery Soli has added four goals. Voss ranks seventh in the MIAC in shots at 3.58 per game with her 1.33 shots on goal, 11th in the conference. Senior Emma Young has recorded three assists. In goal, senior Annie Waters holds a 0.87 goals-against average (5th in MIAC), with 61 saves (4th in MIAC) and a .871 save percentage, mark that is second in the MIAC.  She is fifth in saves per game at 5.08 and her fourth shutouts ranks tied for fourth in the MIAC.

Historical Performance
CSB has a rich history, recording 27 winning seasons since 1984. Last season, the team finished tied for third in the MIAC with a 6-3-2 conference record and an overall mark of 9-6-3. Consistently competitive, CSB has finished in the MIAC's top four for the past four seasons, including second-place finishes in 2021 and 2022.

Kimble leads CSB
Head coach Steve Kimble, now in his 16th season at CSB, has achieved ten top-four finishes in the MIAC, with a career record of 153-86-35 at the college and 96-47-16 in conference play. Under his guidance, the team has experienced consistent success, including two MIAC championships and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
