Led by Tarrolly, Young and Beier, CSB Tennis has big day as ITA Regional/Midwest Invite opens

WHITEWATER, Wis. -- Ashley Tarrolly, who is seeded No. 2 in singles, moved on in straight sets to lead a standout opening day for the College of Saint Benedict tennis team at the ITA Midwest Regional and Midwest Invite which opened today (Sept. 22) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Tennis competition began Friday morning and continued throughout the day.  Play will continue through Monday, Sept. 25 with the singles finals.  The singles and doubles champions from the ITA Regional Championships will advance to the ITA National Small College Championships. The ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions and eight runners-up (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, and junior/community colleges. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete at one of the 85 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country.

ITA singles results

Tarrolly, who was first-team All-MIAC a year ago with a 9-3 overall record (7-2 in MIAC), had a first-round bye, and then rolled to a straight set win over Dorothy Dean of Loras, 6-1, 6-1. She now plays No. 28 seeded Molly Asfeld of UW-Whitewater at 9 a.m., on Saturday in the round of 32. 

Also picking up wins today in singles included junior Sophia Jonas, who had a 3-6, 6-0, 10-7 win over Mary Gaetdtke of Carroll. Jonas fell in the next round as she lost to No. 27 seeded Lauren Lindout of UW-LaCrosse, 7-6 (4), 6-4.  

Also in the ITA singles play, Morgan Dekan of UW-Eau Claire had a 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 win over CSB's Peyton Kopel, who will move on in the consolation section of play. The same goes to Greta Nesbit, who lost to Mackenzie Lindow of UW-Whitewater, 3-6, 6-3, 10-2. 

ITA Regional Doubles 
CSB's Tarrolly and Jones, ranked No. 16, advanced to the round of 16 on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., against No. 7 seeded Sofia Sacket/Natalia Smith of Luther. After a bye, Tarrolly/Jones defeated Michaela Sullivan/Emma Thole of Bethel, 8-3.  

In doubles, CSB's Peyton Kopel and Kate Perbix fell to Riley O'Donnell/Abby Osterman of Luther, 8-6 and were eliminated.
 
In the Midwest Regional A – Singles
Sophomore Kira Young had a big opening day by winning twice to advance to Saturday's third round and will face Erin Horzewski of Carroll at 9 a.m. Young had a 6-3, 2-6, 10-2 win over Caroline Huchinson of Loras and took a 7-5, 0-6, 10-7 win over Maddy Coopmans of Edgewood in a closely contested competition.

In the Midwest B Class singles
CSB's first-year Kate Perbix had a first round bye and then lost to Kate Trifilio of Carroll, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). She will go to the consolation round.

Midwest Regional Section C - Singles
Sophomore Brooke Beier also shined today with two victories. In the first win she won quite a battle as she edged Zoe Klicker of UW-LaCrosse by 3-6, 6-1, 16-14. She also defeated Natalie Neff of Luther, 6-3, 6-3 and now plays Leia Papancholas of Loras at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday in the third round.

Midwest Invite A - Doubles
Young and Nesbit advanced to the third round the Midwest Invite A doubles play. In the first round, they took an 8-0 win over Giulia Araujo De Barros/Claudia Curtis of UW-Superior. Young and Nesbit also won their second round, 8-1, over Clair Moore and Ellie Kalina of Loras.
