ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team (3-4-2, 3-1-2 MIAC) rallied to tie the game late before Bethel's goal in the final minute resulted in a 3-2 win over the Bennies on Saturday (Dec. 2) in MIAC play at Ritsche Arena.
After trailing 2-0, the Bennies rallied to tie as
Chloe Lewis and
Aurora Opsahl both scored third period goals. Then, Abbie Delong had the game winner at the 18:58 mark to give Bethel the victory.
As a result, Saint Benedict, which is 3-4-2 overall, sit 3-1-2 and tied for third place in the MIAC with 11 conference points. Bethel improved to 4-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAC. In the opener of the two-game series with Bethel, the Bennies and Royal tied 1-1 but CSB won a 2-1 shootout on Friday night in Blaine, Minn.
Next weekend (Dec. 8-9), Saint Benedict will host Dubuque (Iowa) (2-3-0, 2-2 NCHA) on Friday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m., and on Saturday Dec 9 at 5 p.m. Both games will be played at
Ritsche Arena in St. Cloud, Minn.
Game Summary
Bethel scored goals in both the first and second periods to grab a 2-0 lead. First Lindsey Albers scored her third goal of the year on a power play tally at 10:33 of the first period for a 1-0 lead. Evie Sellner and Abbie Delong had assists on the play.
At 19:27 of the second period, Bethel took a 2-0 lead on an even-strength goal by Alison Hoerer, who had her first goal of the season. She was assisted by Emily Wiltse.
Down 2-0, the Bennies rallied to tie the game at 2-2 with a pair of goals in the third period. At 4:13 of the period, sophomore
Chloe Lewis had her first goal of the season and fourth of her career on an even-strength tally. On the score, CSB had assists from
Presley Kraemer and
Jenna Timm, who had her team-best fifth assist of the season.
At 15:57 of the third period, CSB drew even when junior
Aurora Opsahl scored her fourth goal of the season – tying for the team lead. Opsahl now has 21 career goals. Assisting on the goal was senior
Corrine Brown, who had her second assist of the season, and first-year
Emily Wendorf, who now has four assists.
The game-winning play by Delong of Bethel occurred at 18:58 off assists from Kallie Abrahamson and Lindsey Muntifering.
In goal, CSB's
Kate Moffat had 25 saves in 58:58 on the ice. In two games against Bethel, she had 53 saves this weekend. Anna Hanson of Bethel registered 41 saves in 60 minutes of ice- time. CSB out shot Bethel, 43-to-30, led by a team-high eight by
Jenna Timm and six from first-year
Shae Stinnett.
