BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – For the second straight week, junior guard
Sophia Jonas of the College of Saint Benedict basketball team, who recorded a career-high in points for the second time in three games, has been named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Basketball Offensive Player of the Week.
Jonas was honored by the MIAC on Monday (Nov. 20) after recording a career-high 26 points, including six three pointers, in an 82-75 road loss to UW-River Falls on Nov. 16. Jonas was also honored on Nov. 13 and now has four MIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after being honored on Dec. 5 and Dec. 12, 2022. In CSB history, she is the 33
rd player to earn MIAC weekly honors and the second (Laura Wendorff) to earn at least four honors.
In the offensive shootout, the
Bennies battled back from an 11-point deficit to take the lead after three quarters at 62-61. Down 75-68 in the fourth quarter, Jonas keyed a 7-0 run with five straight points for a tie in the final minute. However, the Falcons closed the game on a 7-0 run to take the victory.
Jonas, who scored a career-high in points (26) for the second time in three games, hit 9-of-18 field goals and tied her career-high with six made triples in 11 attempts. She had a season-high four rebounds with two assists and a steal in 39 minutes. Jonas has scored 25, 22 and 26 points in three games to open the season and has six made three-pointers twice in three games.
In NCAA DIII statistics, Jonas is first in the nation in made three-pointers per game at 5.33 and with 16 total on 38 attempts (42.1 percent) ranks seventh in the country. She is also 14th in DIII in points per game at 24.3. With the six threes against UW-River Falls, Jonas has moved to fifth with 144 triples (397 attempts, 36.3 percent, 55 games) on CSB's career three-point list and past Sidney Schiffler, 140, 2016-20; and Kelly Mahlum, 142, 1989-93. In addition, she now has 631 career points, including a team-high 73 in 2023-24.
Jonas and her CSB teammates will next play on Nov. 29 against Saint Mary's in MIAC road play.
