CSB Hockey will host No. 4 UW-River Falls in home opener Thursday

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -  After a pair of road games, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (0-2-0) will host No. 4 ranked UW-River Falls (2-0-0) at 7 p.m., in the Bennies' home opener on Thursday, Nov. 2 at Ritsche Arena.
 
About the UW-River Falls Falcons
UW-River Falls went 2-0 last week, winning against St. Scholastica (8-1) and Augsburg (3-1). The Falcons will be led by head coach Joe Cranston, who is in his 25th season. Maddie McCollins leads the team with two goals and 14 shots, while Megan Goodreau has three assists.
 
Series Notes – UW-RF vs. CSB
When CSB meets UW-River Falls on Thursday evening, the teams will play for the 15th time. CSB has an overall record of 5-10 against UW-River Falls. CSB owns a 3-4 home record. In their last meeting on February 7, 2023, the Falcons defeated the Bennies, 12-2, in River Falls, Wis.

The Bennies return 14 veteran skaters from the 2022-2023 team, which tied for the most wins in school history last year with 14. The 2022-2023 team also set a school record with 11 conference wins and registered a program-best third place conference finish (11-7).
 
CSB has opened the season with a pair of road losses to No. 7 UW-Eau Claire (2-0) by scores of 4-3, 7-1. With the game upcoming tomorrow against UW-River Falls, CSB has a schedule that includes three games against two of the top seven nationally ranked teams in NCAA DIII.
 
So far this year, the Bennies have totaled four goals and allowed 11. The Bennies have been outshot, 110-to-41. In goal, CSB has 99 saves to 37 for the opponents. In power plays, CSB has gone 0-of-10 while opponents are 4-of-14. CSB has won 58 faceoffs and lost 89 for a 39.5 percent conversion rate.
 
Returning All-MIAC performer Aurora Opsahl has one goal this season in the opener against UW-Eau Claire. Opsahl, who has played in 47 career games, scored her 18th career goal in the opener In her career she has three-game winning shots and 19 assists. A year ago, she played in 26 games with a career-high of two goals against UW-Eau Claire on Oct. 29, 2022.
 
In the third period of the 4-3 loss of UW-EC, junior Ava Stinnett recorded her first goal of the season and the 13th of her career. Stinnett, who also had an assist in the second loss to UW-EC, ranks 14th in the MIAC with seven shots.  Stinnett, who has played in 51 career games, has 150 shots on net and 19 assists in her career with the Bennies. A year ago, she was third in the MIAC for face-off wins against total faceoffs (261-of-558). She also tied for fifth in the MIAC with four game-winning goals of the seven goals she scored last year.
 
 Also, in the 4-3 loss to UW-Eau Claire, first year standout Brooklyn Johnson had her first goal of her career.
 
In that opener, junior Sydney Hunst had a pair of assists while junior Sami Boerboom also recorded an assist.  Hunst has played in 32 games with four career assists and one goal. Boerboom has played in 48 games with eight goals, six assists and 60 shots.
 
In the second game against UW-Eau Claire, senior Corrine Brown recorded her first goal of the season. She now has 12 career goals, 18 assists, 146 shots and has played in 55 games.
 
Junior goalie Kate Moffat is ranked second in the MIAC and has recorded 56 saves (.933 PCT) in one game. She has played in eight career games with 226 total saves with an overall record of 5-3.
 
Macy leads CSB Hockey
Head coach Lindsay Macy begins her second year as head coach at Saint Benedict. In her first year, Macy directed the Bennies to a program-best 11 conference wins and tied the program-mark for total wins with 14. CSB was 14-12 overall with an 11-7 record in league play in the MIAC in 2023. The Bennies advanced to the conference semifinals. Two players were named All-MIAC (Jenna Timm, Aurora Opsahl).

After the third match up against a DIII top-10 team on Nov. 2, the Bennies will have a home/away with Concordia-Moorhead. In its MIAC opener, the Bennies will host Concordia (1-0-0) on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m., before traveling to Moorhead, Minn., for a game with the Cobbers on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
