Voss, Willenbring and Waters lead CSB Soccer to 2-0 win over Concordia

Bennies move to 3-0-2 at home in 2023

ST JOSEPH, Minn. – With goals from Alli Voss and Abby Willenbring, plus a fourth shutout by goalkeeper Annie Waters, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team (5-5-2, 3-3-1 MIAC) earned a 2-0 win over Concordia-Moorhead (5-5-1, 3-3-0 MIAC) in MIAC play at the CSB Stadium Turf Field.

The Bennies, which improved to 3-0-2 at home this year and 10-0-3 over the past two seasons, jumped up to sixth in the league standings with 10 points and their 3-3-1 record. CSB, which will travel to face Bethel on Saturday (Oct. 14) at 3:30 p.m., improves to 5-5-2 in 2023. CSB is 4-2-2 over its past eight match-ups.

Saint Benedict head soccer coach Steve Kimble praised his team's offensive attack, noting that several players stepped up in key moments against a tough league opponent.

"It feels really good to get the offense going as we have been struggling a little bit the past few games," said Kimble, who recorded his 145th career win. "We made a couple adjustments and a couple players shined. I thought Abby Willenbring's offensive effort made a difference. Emily Cavanaugh made a difference in the midfield as well. We had a lot of good vibes, and we are going to need all the vibes we can get as we look ahead to Bethel," said Kimble.

After a scoreless first half, the Bennies found the back of the net when senior defender Abby Willenbring (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) scored her sixth career goal and first of the season at the 58 minute (58:24) mark.

Junior forward Alli Voss (Edina, Minn./Benilde-St Margaret's) added to the lead about six minutes (65:10) later after receiving a cross from junior midfielder Emily Cavanaugh (Edina, Minn./Edina). Voss tallied her fourth goal of the season and the 19th of her career. Cavanaugh registered her first career collegiate assist.

Junior goalkeeper Annie Waters (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) recorded her fourth shutout of the season. Waters, who had four saves in facing 10 shots, was also pleased with the effort of her team.

"It was a good team win with everyone doing their job. We were able to put the ball in the back of the net, which is what we have been working on the past couple of games," said Waters, who was back in goal after missing three games.

For the game, CSB had a 21-to-10 shots advantage, which included a 12-to-4 margin in shots on goal. The Bennies also had the advantage in corners, 4-0.
