Sophia Jonas sets three-point season record but Bennies fall to Concordia

Jonas ranks sixth nationally with 62 threes in just 19 games

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Sophia Jonas set the three-point season record, but the College of Saint Benedict Basketball Team dropped a 67-56 MIAC decision to Concordia (Minn.) on Monday night. The Bennies had a five-game winning streak ended by the Cobbers which extended their winning streak to eight games.

The Bennies fall to 14-5 overall and to 11-5 on the season in the MIAC as they sit in a tie for third place with Bethel. The Cobbers retained a hold on second in the MIAC at 13-3 with a 16-3 overall record.

Saint Ben's came out fast, jumping to a 24-14 lead after the first quarter and building a 37-25 lead at the halftime break by outscoring the Cobbers, 13-11. However, the game was the tale of two halves as CSB was outscored 42-19 in the second half. Concordia had a 25-13 edge in the third quarter to draw the game even at 50-50. With a 17-6 fourth quarter, the Cobbers picked up their second win of the season over the Bennies.

Jonas sets three-point season record at 62
Despite the setback, Jonas, a sophomore from Hudson, Wis., had a big first quarter with a pair of three-pointers to set the school season record. Jonas, who ranks sixth in NCAA DIII with 62 made three-pointers, broke the mark of 61 by Joyce Spanier in 1990-91 with a pair of three-pointers.   While Spanier hit her 61 three-pointers in 27 games, Jonas was able to knock down 62 in 19 games with six games left in the regular season.

Jonas finished with 10 points as she hit 4-of-11 field goals and 2-of-7 from three-point range.  She now has 25 double-digit scoring games with 10 straight this season. Senior guard Gabby Martin added 10 points with three assists and two rebounds. She now has 22 career double-digit scoring games in her career with her sixth this year.

Also, for CSB, junior guard Carla Meyer had eight points, four rebounds and two assists. For the second straight game, sophomore forward Olivia Boily had eight points adding a pair of rebounds and three assists. First-year guard Megan Morgan supplied seven points on 3-of-5 shooting including converting a three-pointer in her only attempt.

After CSB shot 43 percent in the first half, the Bennies made just 7-of-29 field goals for 24.1 percent in the second half to finish at 34.8 percent for the game on 23-of-66 shooting. The Bennies made just 5-of-18 three-point shots for 27.8 percent and 5-of-9 from the foul line. Meanwhile, the Cobbers knocked down 16-of-31 field goals in the second half for 51.5 percent to finish at 48.1 percent on 26-of-54 shooting. But the key was the Cobbers ability to hit from distance with 7-of-15 made threes in the second half. They were 7-of-15  after going 1-of-7 in the first half.

The Bennies, which led by as many as 17 points (35-18, 2nd Q), had a 30-to-24 edge in points in the paint. But the Cobbers had a 42-to-22 edge in rebounds and with their efficiency in shooting were able to rally for the win. Emily Beseman led the Cobbers in scoring with 17 points and hit 3-of-6.
