Meyer hits 100th career 3 but CSB Basketball falls at Gustavus Adolphus

ST. PETER, Minn. – Carla Meyer had 11 points, including her 100th career three-pointer, but a hot-shooting Gustavus Adolphus squad (18-2, 15-2 MIAC) earned an 83-57 win over the College of Saint Benedict Basketball Team (14-6, 11-6 MIAC) on Wednesday night (Feb. 1) in MIAC action.

With its second straight road loss, the Bennies fall to 11-6 in the MIAC. Gustavus recorded its 10th straight win as they continue to lead the MIAC with a 15-2 mark.

The Gusties, which were led by Kylie Baranick with 21 points (8-of-10 field goals) and Anna Sanders with 17 points, opened a 23-10 lead in the first quarter and extended the advantage to 41-23 with an 18-13 margin in the second quarter. The Gusties hit 17-of-27 field goals for 75 percent and 6-of-8 from three-point range in building the 18-point lead. In the second half, Gustavus had a 23-17 margin in the third quarter and a 19-17 advantage in the fourth quarter to earn the home win.

Inside the Numbers

The numbers certainly favored Gustavus, which was 34-of-58 from the field for 58.6 percent, including 9-of-16 for 56.3 percent from three-point range. CSB made 23-of-50 field goals for 46 percent and converted 7-of-15 three-pointers for 46.7 percent. The Bennies also lost the rebound battle, 29-to-20 as the Gusties had a 38-to-24 margin of points in the paint. They also had 11 steals for a 13-to-7 advantage in points off turnovers while recording a 14-0 differential in fast break points.

The Bennies were led by junior guard Carla Meyer with 11 points as she hit 3-of-5 from three-point range. With that total, Meyer, who had three rebounds and three assists, hit her 100th career three-pointer in her 44th career double-digit scoring game. Sophomore forward Olivia Boily added eight points on 4-of-6 shooting with two rebounds. First-year Kira Young had a career-high seven points as she made all three of her field goals including a three-point shot.

Senior guard Gabby Martin had six points and a team high six rebounds. Sophia Jonas had six points including a pair of threes as she now has 64 in her career. First-year Megan Morgan had six points while first-year guard Megan Driste hit her first career-three-point shot.

First Quarter -- Gustavus hits 67 percent to take lead
In the opening seven minutes, Gustavus raced to a 17-8 lead by hitting 7-of-10 field goals, including three of four from three-point range. CSB was 4-of-9, led by two baskets by Boily. The Gusties continued their run, opening a 21-8 lead with 1:03 to play. After Tori Szathmary hit a shot off an assist by Boily, Gustavus answered to take a 23-10 lead at the break. While CSB was just 5-of-16 for 31.3 percent and 0-2 from three-point range, Gustavus made 10-of-15 field goals for 66.7 percent and 3-of-4 from distance. Sanders led all scorers with seven points.

Second Quarter – Bennies shoot just 37.9 percent in opening half
At 8:33 of the second period, Meyer hit a jumper as CSB trailed, 25-12. But the Gusties again answered, hitting a pair of triples to lead 31-12 (6:05). Gustavus hit 5-of-7 threes to open the game and built the lead to 35-18. With 2:26 to play in the first half, Meyer hit the 99th three-pointer of her career as the Bennies trailed, 36-23. Another 5-0 run, including a three pointer gave Gustavus a 41-23 lead. While the Gusties shooting tailed off slightly in the second quarter, they still built the double-digit lead on the strength of outstanding shooting. Gustavus, which was 7-of-12 from field in the second quarter, was 17-of-27 for 75 percent in the half with 6-of-8 from three-point range. The Bennies, which had a 14-to-12 rebound edge, hit just 11-of-29 from the floor for 37.9 percent and made just 1-of-5 from three-point range.

3rd Quarter – Meyer hit 100th career 3-pointer
Things were much better for CSB in the second half as they totaled 34 points and made 12-of-21 field goals for 57.1 percent. In the third quarter, CSB was 5-of-11 for 45.5 percent, hitting 5-of-8 from three-point range. Gustavus opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 48-23 as CSB missed its first four shots of the period. Off an assist from Lydia Hay, Jonas hit her 63rd three of the year as the Bennies trailed, 48-26 (6:29). And two foul shots by Gabby Martin pulled CSB within 48-28. At 5:24 of the third period, Meyer's 100th career three cut the lead to 50-31. However, the Bennies couldn't make up ground on the Gusties which was 10-of-19 for 52.6 percent in the third quarter.

4th Quarter – Young, Driste hit threes to lead offense
The Bennies had their best shooting quarter by hitting 7-of-10 field goals. However, Gustavus, which was 7-of-12 for 58.3 percent, outscored CSB, 19-17. Morgan scored early in the fourth quarter as CSB trailed, 66-42. Another basket by Morgan and one by Boily helped CSB stay within, 73-46.
