Bennie tennis falls to undefeated Carleton

SARTELL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team hung tough with undefeated Carleton, but fell 6-3 to the Knights Sunday morning in Sartell.

Three set wins marks the most for the Bennies against the Knights since the 2008-09 season.

"Our focus was awesome (Sunday) – especially coming off a long day in the wind (Saturday)," CSB head coach Michael Engdahl said. "We played one of the top teams in the MIA strong and came up clutch in a couple matches. Now we need to enjoy a couple days off and be ready for another battle Saturday."

CSB (8-5, 4-2) picked up one doubles win to hold strong against the Knights (7-0, 3-0) in doubles play, but Carleton came out on top in singles. Maria Bedford and Greta Nesbit won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles for CSB to get the team on the board. Lily Fredericks and Peyton Kopel fell 8-0 at No. 1 doubles and Jane Bodensteiner and Sophia Jonas lost 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Jonas and Grace Lee both picked up singles wins for the Bennies Sunday. Jonas won in extra sets, coming away with a 6-, 4-6, 10-7 win at No. 5 singles, and Lee won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. The Knights, however, won at No. 1-4 singles to seal the win.

Fredericks fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Kopel lost 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Nesbit fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Bodensteiner lost 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.

CSB is off now until Saturday, April 9, when it heads to St. Paul to take on Bethel in another key MIAC match.
