ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team split a MIAC doubleheader with St. Kate's Friday evening in St. Paul.
The Wildcats won a tight first game 5-4 thanks to a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, but the Bennies came out swinging in the second game and won 10-1 in five innings to secure the split.
Saint Benedict is now 25-7 overall and 13-5 and in third in the MIAC just ahead of St. Kate's. The Wildcats are 19-15 overall and in fourth in the MIAC with a 12-6 mark. St. Olaf is ahead of CSB at 15-3 and the Royals lead the league with a 19-1 record.
The hits came early and often for the Bennies in the second game of the day Friday. The Wildcats walked in a run with bases loaded, and then
Megan Rasmussen cleared the bases with a grand slam to make it 5-0 after one inning.
Addy Bowne sent in a run in the second to make it 6-0, and the Wildcats got one back in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-1.
CSB scored three in the third thanks to an RBI double from
Jordyn Swoboda and RBI single from
Mo Burns, and Burns later came around to steal home to make it 9-1. Both teams were scoreless in the fourth, and Burns added another RBI to her resume with a double in the fifth to make it 10-1 and end the game early.

Tiffany Thompson picked up the win on the mound – her fourth of the season.
In the first game of the day, the Wildcats hit a solo homer in the second and then used a pair of RBI singles in the third to take a 3-0 lead on the Bennies. CSB made it a one-run game in the fifth thanks to a two-run homer from Swoboda, and took a 4-3 lead in the sixth off a two-run triple from
Katie Carlson. The Wildcats used an RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, and that's where the score stayed through the end of regulation and into extra innings.
Rasmussen singled to start the top of the ninth, but that was the team's lone hit. The Wildcats ended the game in the bottom of the inning with a double to center and an RBI single.
Carlson finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Bowne added two hits for CSB, which had nine total hits. Carlson also had a double.
Elly Novak threw the first three innings and gave up three runs on six hits, and Thompson took the loss after giving up two runs in 5.1 innings of work.
CSB returns to action and is back at home Sunday, May 1, when it hosts Saint Mary's at 1 p.m.
