DULUTH, Minn. – In the first MIAC meeting between the College of Saint Benedict tennis team and St. Scholastica, the Bennies came away victorious Friday night.
CSB got back in the win column with a 6-3 victory over the Saints in Duluth, Minn. This marked the first meeting between the two teams since April 23, 2013, and the 11
th meeting in program history.
"It was a hard-fought win (Friday), and we did a great job battling the ups and downs throughout the match," CSB coach
Michael Engdahl said. "It was one of those matches where you could see all the hard work pay off. Now we need to keep the positive vibes rolling into Sunday and next weekend."
The Bennies (7-3, 3-1) took a 2-1 lead over the Saints (5-4, 1-2) in doubles play. The Saints beat
Lily Fredericks and
Peyton Kopel 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, but
Jane Bodensteiner and
Sophia Jonas teamed up to win 8-3 at No. 2 doubles and
Maria Bedford and
Greta Nesbit won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
CSB followed up doubles play with four singles wins to pick up its third MIAC win of the season. Kopel won a tiebreaker at No. 2 singles to help the Bennies. She lost the first set 7-5, but came back to win 6-0 and 13-11. Bodensteiner won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, Jonas won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 and
Grace Lee picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.
Fredericks fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Nesbit dropped a tight match at No. 3 singles, falling 4-6, 6-1, 5-10.
CSB returns to action and is back at home for the first time since Feb. 19 on Sunday, March 27, when it takes on St. Cloud State at 1 p.m. at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
