Moffat has career night in loss to Augsburg

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – First year goalie Kate Moffat had a career night in goal Friday in the College of Saint Benedict hockey team's loss to Augsburg.

In her third complete game of the season, Moffat stopped 36 shots to help keep the Bennies in the game in an eventual 3-0 loss to the Auggies in the team's final home game of the regular season. With one game left to play, CSB is 10-10-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the MIAC while the Auggies are 11-10-2 overall and 7-6-2 in the league.

The first period was scoreless in St. Cloud as both teams struggled to find a rhythm offensively. The two teams each put six shots on net, but no one scored.

Augsburg got on the board midway through the second with a shorthanded goal on a breakaway, and that proved to be all the Auggies would need. Both teams picked up the pace in the second as they each had 14 shots on net, but the Bennies couldn't find a way to score. They had three power-play opportunities, and had multiple shots on net – including back-to-back shots from Zoe Culshaw-Klein and shots from Shauna Miller and Lily Aamodt – but nothing found the back of the net.

The third period was all Augsburg as they put 19 shots on net to CSB's six and scored twice more, including a power-play goal in the second minute to go up 2-0. The third and final goal of the game came at the 16:40 mark. CSB pulled Moffat in the final minute, but couldn't break up the shutout.

Moffat stopped 36 of the 39 shots she faced and picked up just her first loss of the season in net. Brynn Sexauer and Ava Stinnett paced the CSB offense with four shots on net.

CSB and Augsburg wrap up the series and 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, in Minneapolis. The bracket for the 2022 MIAC Tournament will be released Sunday as the Hamline/Concordia series scheduled to start Friday had to be pushed to Saturday/Sunday due to blizzard conditions and closed highways in northwestern Minnesota.
