MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – After a tough loss to Augsburg to end its home season Friday night, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team was looking to come out and secure the win and the season split with the Auggies to hold onto the No. 5 seed in the upcoming MIAC Tournament.
Much like Friday night, however, the Bennies got good looks and put up plenty of shots – they just weren't falling.
CSB ended the regular season with a 1-0 loss at Augsburg Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis. The Bennies wrap up the regular season 10-11-1 overall and 6-7-1 in the MIAC. The official MIAC Tournament bracket will be released Sunday since Friday's Concordia/Hamline game had to be postponed due to weather, but the Bennies earned the No. 6 seed and head to Winona Saturday, Feb. 26, for a MIAC Quarterfinal game against Saint Mary's.
Senior goalie
Maggie Gilchrist had a solid night in the net Saturday, stopping 31 of the 32 shots she faced, but that one proved to be all the Auggies (12-10-2, 8-6-2) needed. Augsburg's lone goal came at the 7:32 mark of the first period, and the Auggies held on for the win after that. The Bennies put 11 shots on net in the second period and 12 more in the third, but none found their way into the back of the net.
CSB pulled Gilchrist for the final two minutes of the game and
Zoe Culshaw-Klein and
Aurora Opsahl both got shots on net, but couldn't score.
Both teams finished with 32 shots on net Saturday.
Annika Brodt finished with five shots to lead the Bennies and Culshaw-Klein added four.
The first round of the MIAC Tournament starts Tuesday, Feb. 23, and features the No. 7-10 seeds before the quarterfinals kick off Feb. 26 with the high seeds hosting.
