Soccer gears up for two back to back home games this weekend

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – An explosive start for CSB Soccer in their first game of the season against Minnesota Morris creates even more excitement to play in front of their home crowd for the first time this year in a pair of non-conference home games. 

CSB kicks off the Labor Day weekend home stand on Saturday, September 4th for a 1 p.m. game against the Wartburg Knights, then on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game against the UW-Whitewater Warhawks.

About the Knights 
In the shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19, the Wartburg Knights made the most of it. The Knights finished with a record of 7-0. Their final game of the season was a 2-0 win against Luther on April 21st. Forward Joy Smith, who returns as a senior this season, led the Knights in points with 3 goals and 1 assist in 7 games. 

About the Warhawks 
The Warhawks are ready to be back on the field this season after not competing at all during the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Looking back at the 2019 season, the Warhawks ended that year with a 14-6-3 record and winning the WIAC Championship to make an appearance in the NCAA DIII Tournament. 

The Storyline 
Wednesday marked an explosive start to the season for the Bennies, who scored a whopping 10 goals against Minnesota Morris. The 10-0 over Morris saw multiple Bennies with multiple goals including senior Roxy Veldman, sophomore Caralyn Conners, and sophomore Erica Golenzer

Who to Watch 
Back for her final season is senior Roxy Veldman, who led the team with 2 goals in the shortened season last year and has already begun this season with a hat trick in her first game back. Goalkeeper Paige Kahlmeyer, returning as a junior this season, ended last season with a .709 save percentage and 2.50 GAA.
