RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team started the new season off with a split in a pair of nonconference matches Saturday afternoon. After starting the day with a close 5-4 loss to Division II Southwest Minnesota State, the Bennies came back to beat UW-River Falls 7-1 in River Falls, Wis.
"We have to be proud of the work we put in (Saturday)," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "Everything we have worked on in practice showed up on the court. You can't ask for more than that. Now we just need to keep at it and we will be a team that's tough to beat."
In the first match of the day, the Mustangs took a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition.
Jane Bodensteiner and
Maria Bedford teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, but SMSU beat
Peyton Kopel and
Sophia Jonas by that same score at No. 2 doubles.
Ashley Tarrolly and
Lily Fredericks gave their SMSU opponents everything they had before falling 8-7.
Three of the singles matches went to extra sets, and two went the Bennies' way, but the Mustangs held on for the win. Fredericks won in extra sets 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 at No. 2 singles, and
Greta Nesbit picked up the first win of her Bennie tennis career 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 5 singles.
Grace Lee picked up a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.
Jonas pushed her No. 6 singles match to extra sets before falling 6-3, 2-6, 5-10. Tarrolly fell 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Kopel lost 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
The match against the Falcons was all the Bennies from the get-go. Tarrolly and Fredericks won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, while Bedford and Bodensteiner teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles and Kopel and Jonas won by the same score at No. 3 doubles.
Tarrolly won the first singles match of her CSB career thanks to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, and Fredericks picked up her third total win of the day with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles. Kopel won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Bodensteiner won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Jonas fell 4-6, 7-5, 8-10 at No. 5 singles, and Nesbit's match at No. 4 singles was left unfinished due to the dark.
CSB is at home for the first time in 2021-22 Saturday, Sept. 18, when it hosts Wartburg at 9:30 a.m. and Moorhead at 3:30 p.m.
