DECORAH, Iowa – In the first 5K races of their College of Saint Benedict cross country careers, sophomore Fiona Smith and junior Emily Demorett both jumped into the top 50 in program history Saturday afternoon.

Smith set the second program record in as many races, finishing second in the Luther All-American Inivte in 17:48.11. That is eight seconds faster than the previous record of 17:56, set in 1994 by former All-American and CSB Athletics Hall of Fame athlete Missy Petersen. Smith is just the second runner in Saint Benedict cross country history to break 18 minutes in the 5K.

Demorett finished fifth in 19:30.44 – tied for the 41st-best time in CSB history. Smith and Demorett's top-10 finishes helped the Bennies take third as a team at the 11-team invite in Iowa. The Luther alumni won the event with 68 points after placing three runners in the top 10, Loras took second with 73 points and CSB finished just three points behind the Duhawks with 76 points. CSB finished ahead of fourth-place Bethel by 37 points.

Smith finished less than seven seconds behind Loras junior Kassie Rosenbum, who won the race in 17:48.94. She was seven seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.

Junior Tracy Renier and sophomore Keiley Maahs both recorded top-25 finishes for CSB. Renier finished 18th in 20:29.59, and Maahs took 25th in 20:45.05. Sophomores Elise Yeager and Bridget Tetmeyer finished just outside the top 25 as they took 26th (20:55.38) and 27th (20:56.26), respectively.

First years Lucy Jagoe (32nd) and Natalie Lieser (37th) also finished inside the top 40.

The Bennies are off now until Saturday, Sept. 25, when they travel to Northfield for the Carleton Invite.
