ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After outstanding outdoor seasons with the College of Saint Benedict track and field team, first year
Fiona Smith and junior
Tracy Renier both earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors, it was announced this week.
Renier earned the first all-region nod of her career in the steeplechase, and Smith earned a pair of region accolades in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs. This winter, Smith became the first athlete in CSB history to earn three all-region honors in the same season after earning the honor in the mile, 3K and 5K during the indoor season, and her two accolades during the outdoor season bring her career total to five.
Renier had a career year in the steeplechase as she finished runner-up in the event at the MIAC Championships. Her time of 11:21.72 is the third-best time in Saint Benedict track and field history, and is also one of the best times in the region in 2021. That time is also in the top 40 in Division III.
After an impressive indoor season to start her CSB running career, Smith was equally as impressive in the 2021 outdoor season. She earned a pair of All-MIAC First Team honors at the outdoor conference meet after winning the 5K and finishing third in the 1,500. Her 1,500 time of 4:38.91 marked a personal-best, the third-best time in program history and a top-35 time in Division III. Earlier this spring, Smith ran a 16:53.29 5K, which shattered her school record and marked the first time in program history a runner broke 17 minutes in the event.
In order to earn all-region honors, an athlete must finish the season ranked in the top five in the region in their individual event(s).
Smith heads into the 2021 NCAA Outdoor National Championships ranked eighth overall in Division III in the 5K and with the seventh-fastest time of the 19 athletes competing in the event at the national championships. Her race is scheduled for 4 p.m. CST Saturday, May 29, in Greensboro, N.C.
