Early goal helps Bennies play to double OT tie with SMU

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team took control early in Sunday's game against Saint Mary's, but a late goal from the Cardinals forced overtime and the game ended tied after 110 minutes of play.

The Bennies scored in the first minute of the game and Saint Mary's scored in the final 20 seconds of regulation, and those were the only two goals scored Sunday as the two teams played to a 1-1, double overtime tie in St. Joseph.

Senior Abby Worthington got things off to a fast start and swung the momentum the Bennies' way early in the game with the first goal of her career. CSB got an early corner kick, and from the corner the team played the ball out in front of its own bench. Cecelia Miller kicked a long ball into the box and Worthington got it in the right corner of the box, just in front of the net. SMU goalie Alexis Nguyen came out for the ball, but Worthington was able to send the ball around her outstretched feet and into the net.

After the goal both teams settled in. Saint Mary's put four first-half shots on goalie Paige Kahlmeyer, but she stopped all four. Miller had a wide shot shortly after the goal, but Worthington's goal was the team's only shot on net of the half.

The Cardinals put another shot on Kahlmeyer early in the second half, but that shot was stopped, and neither team had any solid chances until SMU scored its goal in the final minute of regulation. The Cardinals had a shot that went wide and out of play, and the Bennies looked to keep the ball away from Saint Mary's and just play out the remainder of the game.

But the Cardinals got the ball in the middle of the field and were able to drive down and score on Kahlmeyer with 17 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Saint Mary's had a shot that was saved early in OT, and Chloe Miller put a shot on Nguyen in the first OT, but neither team found the back of the net in either overtime, and the game ended in a tie.

CSB had four shots on net to the Cardinals' eight. Kahlmeyer stopped seven of the eight shots she faced to earn the tie.

The Bennies are back at home once more this season when they host St. Thomas at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 27. CSB ends the season at St. Kate's Sunday, May 2.
