MOORHEAD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team snapped a four-match losing streak and picked up its first MIAC win of the season Tuesday night when it beat Concordia 7-2 in Moorhead.
Four matches went to extra sets or tiebreakers Tuesday at Courts Plus – and all four went the Bennies' way. CSB is now 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the conference and Concordia is 3-6 overall, 1-6 in the MIAC.
"We played some great tennis (Tuesday), and we have a lot to be proud of," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "Certain moments that have hurt us earlier this season we were ready for and we played through those moments perfectly. We definitely created some positive momentum heading into the weekend."
The Bennies started Tuesday night with a 2-1 advantage thanks to a pair of doubles wins.
Peyton Kopel and
Jane Bodensteiner teamed up to win 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, and
Maria Bedford and
Grace Lee won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
Kayla McIver and
Lily Fredericks dropped an 8-3 match at No. 1 doubles.
McIver fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, but it was all Saint Benedict the rest of the way. Fredericks dropped her first set at No. 2 singles but came back to win 2-6, 6-3, 10-3. Kopel won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and Bodensteiner fought through a tight second set to win the tiebreaker – and the match – at No. 4 singles. She won 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
Bedford and Lee's matches both needed extra sets or a tiebreaker at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Bedford also dropped her first set but came back to win 5-7, 6-3, 10-5, and Lee came back from being down in the second set to win in a tiebreaker: 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Saint Benedict has three MIAC matches remaining in the regular season – and all three are scheduled to be played on the team's home court. CSB hosts Macalester starting at 5 p.m. Friday, April 23, and St. Olaf at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24.
