ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team knows how to keep games interesting for its home fans.
After picking up a 3-2 win over Bethel in the team's season opener on April 11, the Bennies defeated Gustavus by the same score Sunday afternoon – only this victory came in double overtime.
After being down much of the second half, CSB tied the game at the 78-minute mark, took a lead on a penalty kick in the final minute of the game and then gave up a goal 10 seconds later to send it to overtime. First year
Ella Young ended the game in the 105
th minute with her first goal of the season to lift CSB to a 3-2 win over the Gusties at the OAC.
After a scoreless first half, Gustavus (2-2) wasted little time getting on the board with a breakaway goal at the 47:53 mark. That 1-0 lead held for more than 30 minutes until
Clair Lehmann scored her first goal of the season to tie things up at 1-1 at the 78:23 mark. Goalie
Paige Kahlmeyer booted the ball down the field and Lehmann picked it up, headed the ball to herself off a bounce and then kicked it in past Gustavus' goalie.
The Bennies scored what appeared to be the game-winning goal when the Gusties were called for a penalty in the box and
Ella Hinkemeyer made the penalty kick at the 89:35 mark, but Gustavus took the ball straight down the field and sent a long, high shot over Kahlmeyer's head at 89:45 to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Saint Benedict put two shots on net in overtime but neither found the back of the net, so the game went to a second 10-minute overtime. After five scoreless minutes, Young took a pass from
Chloe Miller on the right side of the net and booted the ball past the Gusties' goalie to end the game in her team's favor.
CSB put up 28 shots to Gustavus' 15, and held a 13-9 edge in shots on net. Kahlmeyer made seven saves to pick up her second win of the season.
The Bennies are off now until Sunday, April 25, when they host Saint Mary's starting at 2 p.m. at the OAC.
