ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Junior
Grace Lee picked up the lone win for the College of Saint Benedict tennis team Saturday afternoon in a MIAC match with Bethel.
Lee won at No. 6 singles for the Bennies, who fell 8-1 to the Royals in the team's second outdoor match of the season.
"We definitely had our chances in a lot of matches (Saturday)," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "We are so close to turning matches our way. We just need to stay focused on the right things and keep working hard. Everyone on this team should be so proud of the way we have faced adversity this season. It's only a matter of times before things go our way."
Bethel (7-4, 4-1) swept doubles play to kick off the match.
Kayla McIver and
Lily Fredericks fell 8-0 at No. 1 doubles,
Jane Bodensteiner and
Peyton Kopel lost 8-3 at No. 2 doubles and Lee teamed up with
Maria Bedford and fought hard before falling 8-7 at No. 3 doubles.
Lee picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, but that was the only win the Bennies (2-6, 0-5) could pull out. Two matches went to extra sets, but both eventually went the Royals' way. Kopel fell 7-5, 0-6, 10-4 at No. 3 singles, and Bedford went extra sets at No. 5 singles before falling 6-1, 4-6, 10-7.
McIver lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Fredericks fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Bodensteiner wrapped up the day with a 6-0, 6-2 loss at No. 4 singles.
